Title: Advanced Visualization Laboratory, NCSA

URL: http://avl-test.ncsa.illinois.edu/

Description: The Advanced Visualization Laboratory’s (AVL) mission is to communicate science, inspiring audiences to learn about scientific concepts through capturing the thrill of scientific discovery and wonder of complex systems. Working in close collaboration with domain scientists, AVL creates high-resolution, cinematic, data-driven scientific visualizations. These visualizations provide insight into computational science—a key method of contemporary science–since they are based on supercomputer-generated models of scientific theories about natural phenomenon that are so advanced they could not be brought to the public in any other way. AVL shares its work with the world through shows featured in digital full-dome planetariums, IMAX theaters, and documentary television. In order to perform this cyberoutreach, AVL develops and uses a unique cyberinfrastructure, which includes visualization pipelines built from customized software and hardware elements. At AVL, we are continually advancing our capabilities through developing new cybertechnologies, advanced visualization tools, and software production methods. The cyberinfrastructure we have developed and continues to grow is especially suited to the type of visualization in which we specialize: the cosmos and the climate. Each member of the AVL team plays a unique role and contributes a variety of skills to the process, development, and production. Our expertise includes advanced graphics and visualization techniques, artistic design, cinematic choreography, multimedia and video production, and data management and render wrangling. The lab is part of the University of Illinois’s National Center for Supercomputing Applications (NCSA), which is dedicated to providing powerful computers and expert support to help thousands of scientists and engineers across the country improve our world.

Description: The Airport Safety Management Program (ASMP) is one of the focus research areas of the Center of Excellence for Airport Technology (CEAT) at the University of Illinois. In 1999 the FAA's Center of Excellence Office approached the University of Illinois' Center of Excellence (known then as the Center of Excellence for Airport Pavement Research) with a request to provide assistance in addressing wildlife issues at airports. Avoiding collisions between birds and aircraft was the focus of wildlife management and birdstrike hazard warning systems that were in early stages of development at that time. That assistance was provided in the first projects in what is now the ASMP. In 2001, the University of Illinois COE changed its name to the Center of Excellence for Airport Technology (CEAT) to include its broader areas of research topics, such as wildlife management.

Title: American Indian Studies Program, College of LAS

URL: https://ais.illinois.edu/

Description: American Indian Studies is committed to the highest standards of professional and scholarly conduct and the best ideals of academic freedom. We are also committed to developing strong and sustaining partnerships with people and programs in American Indian and Indigenous communities. These commitments will sometimes create tensions and might at times be in conflict, but we see them both as necessary to our conception of the work we do. Free academic inquiry helps us to test the limits of accepted wisdom, seek out new approaches to chronic problems, and recognize that being creative about the future might lead us to embrace people and ideas that have been in various ways excluded from the American Indian social and political world. At the same time, our commitment to partnering with people and programs in Native communities creates a need for us to make our work intelligible to a constitutive audience of that work. While we retain responsibility for defining the boundaries and limits of our scholarly and creative work, we also actively seek opportunities to be transparent in articulating what we do and why.

Title: Assembly Hall

URL: http://www.uofiassemblyhall.com/

Description: The Assembly Hall opened on March 2, 1963 and continues to attract attention for its design and construction. Four hundred feet across, it at one time was one of only two-edge supported domes in the world. The roof is supported by 614 miles of one-quarter inch steel wire wrapped at the base of the dome under intensive pressure. The architect was Max Abramovitz, a distinguished University of Illinois alumnus. His firm also designed the United Nations Buildings, much of Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts and the University of Illinois' own Krannert Center for the Performing Arts. In seating capacity, Assembly Hall ranks among the great arenas of major cities. It has nearly 16,000 permanent seats, but when portable chairs are placed on the floor for an in-the-round performance there is potential of up to 17,200 depending on the size of the stage. The largest Illinois arena outside of The United Center in Chicago, Assembly Hall continues to present the hottest and most exciting performers and events in the world!

Beespotters register and then log in to upload photos they’ve taken; they can try to identify their specimens with the user-friendly color-based keys on the website or leave it for the content master, graduate student Terry Harrison, to identify. Species identity, date and locality are then entered into the database, where they can be cross-referenced by species, location, or collector; moreover, over 7000 historical records of bees from the INHS collection have been entered and can be accessed and cross-checked with contemporary sightings to determine whether ranges have shifted with time.
