Description: This is the digital version of the Blacks on Stamp exhibition that the Africana Studies Department first presented in February 2012 as part of the department’s annual Artist-in-Residence program. Presented in a small Rowe Arts gallery at UNC Charlotte’s main campus, the event lasted for only five days but the exhibition received more than 150 visitors from Metrolina region and as far as Raleigh, NC. The enthusiasm showed for the exhibition by students and members of our extended community convinced me that there should be a digital version for the exhibition. I am deeply grateful to Heather McCullough, Debra Myers, and Danelle Ead of the Special Collections Department in the Murrey Atkins Library for accepting my proposal, and for working tirelessly to support and implement the project.

Description: Artist Stephen Hayes encountered an image of a slave ship diagram in a printmaking class that would eventually lead to his installation, Cash Crop.Coupled with a disposition for three-demensional objects which began in his youth- his parents would often bring him old machine and computer parts - the work of this young artist suggests a creative mind that has a unique insight into the emothinal holds of people. As a undertone, Hayes has linked his historical transport of humans with today's transportation of products made by the exploitation of people through sweat shops and cheap labor in Third World nations. Cash Crop is an exhibition that invites viewers to wald into an emotional and physical and psychic space to confront the past, present, and future.

Description: Dr. Edward Jenner and His Legacy commemorated the 225th anniversary of Jenner’s innovative contribution to vaccinology. Through the centuries, millions of people perished from smallpox with many survivors often blinded or left with disfiguring scars. Seeking a safer and more effective alternative to the commonly practiced variolation (inoculation with smallpox virus), Jenner applied what he learned from local farmers, laborers, and physicians to vaccinate little James Phipps on May 14, 1796. The method involved using “cowpox” from a milkmaid’s hand, followed six weeks later by an immunologic challenge with smallpox inoculum to demonstrate protection from the dreaded disease. Jenner’s published accounts of this clinical trial and similar critical observations brought needed recognition to the hypothesis of conferred immunity. Remarkably, less than two centuries after Jenner’s historic procedure, the World Health Organization declared naturally-occurring smallpox to be eradicated. This exhibit presents materials highlighting Jenner’s initial experiment, public opposition to cowpoxing, smallpox outbreaks in Charlotte, vaccine development for other diseases (including COVID-19), and medical text descriptions about smallpox from days of old. The main floor exhibit items were on display April 12 - August 12, 2021. You are welcome to browse this digital exhibit to discover more about Jenner’s enduring legacy in the history of medicine!

Description: UNC Charlotte acquired the engravings in 1967 from the estate of the Honorable Herschel V. Johnson, a Charlotte resident who served in diplomatic posts throughout the world, including minister to Sweden and ambassador to Brazil. Acquisition of this collection was made possible through the cooperation of AIA Charlotte, a Section of the North Carolina Chapter of the American Institute of Architects through the contributions of member firms. They were the first works of art acquired by UNC Charlotte. The series consists of 61 etchings which are held at Atkins Library Special Collections, with a selection on display on the library’s second floor. Most of the prints are in the second, third, and fourth states, indicating that they were reprinted by Piranesi.

Description: Heroes and Villains: Silver Age Comics at Atkins Library is an exhibit of Silver Age superhero comic books from J. Murrey Atkins Library Special Collections. The exhibit particularly highlights comics of the era published by industry leaders DC Comics and Marvel Comics. Lasting from the mid-1950s to the early 1970s, the Silver Age of American comic books was a time of creative and commercial resurgence for the medium following a post-World War II decline. Comic book superheroes, largely abandoned by publishers after the war in favor of genres like horror, science fiction, and romance, reclaimed their place in popular culture. During this era, Spider-Man spun his first web, the Avengers assembled, and Depression era characters such as Batman and Superman reached new heights of popularlity. In the Silver Age, comic book artists and writers made contributions to American popular culture that resonate to this day.
