Title: Rackham Program in Public Scholarship (University of Michigan) Web Archives

URL: https://www.rackham.umich.edu/publicscholarship/

Description: "The Rackham Program in Public Scholarship began at the University of Michigan in 1998 as the Arts of Citizenship Program." Arts of Citizenship helped University of Michigan graduate students develop collaborative projects with community partners that addressed real-world challenges and enhanced students’ professional development. Arts of Citizenship offered a set of programs designed to provide professional development opportunities for graduate students interested in careers as public scholars within and/or outside the academy; supported mutually-beneficial creative and scholarly collaborations between U-M graduate students and community organizations that furthered the public roles of the arts, design, and humanities; developed sustainable partnerships that strengthened local communities with arts, cultural, and civic organizations in southeastern Michigan and across the Great Lakes region; and worked with U-M graduate students and faculty to integrate concepts and methodologies from public scholarship into graduate curricula in the arts, design, and humanities. "Since becoming a program of the Rackham Graduate School in 2010, Arts of Citizenship has widened its disciplinary reach, garnering student participation from 51 graduate degree programs across campus. This disciplinary expansion informed the program’s renaming in 2016. The Rackham Program in Public Scholarship reflects the expansion of these programs beyond the arts and culture disciplines to the social science and STEM fields."

Title: Persistent Pasts (University of Michigan) Web Archives

URL: https://www.persistentpasts.com/

Description: "In Spring 2017, the Taubman College Gallery hosted a physical exhibition entitled “Persistent Pasts: The Bicentennial Campus as Archive.” Combining historical research and analysis from the students in Sarah Rovang’s “The Curated Campus” graduate seminar and the design output of Steven Mankouche’s “What If” Options Studio, Persistent Pasts reflected on the University of Michigan’s campus as a repository of memory. Coinciding with the University’s Bicentennial year, this exhibition asked how past traditions, tensions, and technologies have left material or cultural traces on campus space today. By revealing rarely examined aspects of the historical university alongside radical designs for an unrealized present, “Persistent Pasts” invited visitors to question entrenched conceptions of what UM should and could be, architecturally and institutionally. This web exhibition presents key elements of “Persistent Pasts” in a digital space, using mapping and visualization technologies developed by the Knight Foundation and ArcGIS. Each of the projects from “The Curated Campus” has been reimagined in this new format, incorporating bonus archival material and process notes that did not appear in the original exhibition. As an additional element of this digital archive, we have also visualized other Bicentennial initiatives as spatial and architectural elements across a map of the UM campus, associating events, other exhibitions, and ongoing programs with the departments or organizations that sponsor them. This “spatial archive” allows viewers to instantly access Bicentennial projects across Central, Medical, and North Campuses. "

Description: "The School of Education's mission focuses on the improvement of learning and teaching in educational settings. We value the importance of teaching and research within a major research university and we seek to balance these activities with our obligations to serve the education professions. Striking such a balance depends on three key ideas--centering our research squarely on the improvement of educational practice, offering high quality programs of instruction for present and future educational practitioners, and collaborating directly with other educators to improve practice. The idea of this balance is incorporated in our mission. The mission of the School of Education is to improve teaching and learning at all levels of education through the development of leading programs of teaching, research, and service." URL: https://sites.google.com/a/umich.edu/pubpol638ipe2014

Description: The Integrated Policy Exercise (IPE) provides students with a unique opportunity to integrate the knowledge and skills they are acquiring during their Master’s program and apply those educational experiences to a policy debate of immediate importance. The faculty director selects each year’s IPE topic, alternating between domestic and international policy topics. The large scale and intensive timeline are intended to help students better appreciate the complex trade-offs inherent in the public policy process, and to experience the demands of public policy decision-making under conditions of limited time, resources and information. Initiated in 1999, the IPE has grown to now represent a signature event in the Ford School experience. The 2014 IPE awas titled "Great Lakes Water Diversion". Site documents the exercise, including events and background information.
