Title: Peony Garden (University of Michigan) Web Archives

URL: http://mbgna.umich.edu/peony

Description: The Nichols Arboretum Peony Garden is the largest public collection of historic (pre-1950) peony cultivars in North America. We are rebuilding this historic garden to be an internationally significant living reference collection. In the next few years you'll see changes to the peony garden area as we rejuvenate it to tell the story of peonies - in nature and as perceived by diverse cultures. We're accomplishing this in the conceptual framework initiated in the 1920s when both herbaceous and tree peony collections were planned. We will retain the historic design of the main beds but reorganize certain beds with themes. Classic tree peonies from Asian cultures as well as modern American and European selections will be grouped on the nearby slopes of Laurel Ridge. Wild species - many at risk in their native habitats - will give us the complete range to tell the the story of peonies. Website includes information about the history of peonies at U-M, peony organization, and resources for cultivating peonies.

Title: STIET Incentive Centered Design Program (University of Michigan) Web Archives

URL: http://stiet.si.umich.edu/

Description: "In STIET we address the extraordinary changes in communications and computing technology, and the uses and requirements people have for these technologies. We design cyberinfrastructure to support safe, meaningful, efficient, equitable, and productive interactions. Our research focus is on the use of incentive-centered design (ICD) to deliver new and improved systems for human use of the Internet. ICD proceeds from the observation that the performance and quality of Internet systems depends on the ways in which autonomous, self- motivated individuals interact with each other and with the system. System designers cannot program humans like software, but they can provide appropriately designed incentives in an attempt to induce truthfulness, cooperation, volunteerism, high-quality effort or other desirable behaviors. We seek to have an impact on designs of real systems: our projects typically are inspired by a practical problem, move into the realm of abstract theorizing, and end by influencing the design of fielded systems."

How can we make translation more visible? We approach these questions about translation from numerous perspectives: critical and creative, interdisciplinary and international. In this wider sense, translation is at the heart of our community, our university, and the world at large. The website includes translation resources, information on events around campus, and information on the faculty and students involved in the project.
