Description: "The Rackham Program in Public Scholarship began at the University of Michigan in 1998 as the Arts of Citizenship Program." Arts of Citizenship helped University of Michigan graduate students develop collaborative projects with community partners that addressed real-world challenges and enhanced students’ professional development. Arts of Citizenship offered a set of programs designed to provide professional development opportunities for graduate students interested in careers as public scholars within and/or outside the academy; supported mutually-beneficial creative and scholarly collaborations between U-M graduate students and community organizations that furthered the public roles of the arts, design, and humanities; developed sustainable partnerships that strengthened local communities with arts, cultural, and civic organizations in southeastern Michigan and across the Great Lakes region; and worked with U-M graduate students and faculty to integrate concepts and methodologies from public scholarship into graduate curricula in the arts, design, and humanities. "Since becoming a program of the Rackham Graduate School in 2010, Arts of Citizenship has widened its disciplinary reach, garnering student participation from 51 graduate degree programs across campus. This disciplinary expansion informed the program’s renaming in 2016. The Rackham Program in Public Scholarship reflects the expansion of these programs beyond the arts and culture disciplines to the social science and STEM fields."
