Description: University policy and federal law require a review of projects for humane treatment and judicious use of vertebrate animals. At the University of Michigan, adherence to this policy and federal law is assured by the Animal Care and Use Program, formerly the University Committee on Use and Care of Animals (UCUCA), through review of the Animal Use Application, conducting animal facility and laboratory inspections, and providing training and guidance for animal care and use personnel. In fulfilling these responsibilities, the Program staff and Committee members work hand-in-hand to ensure and promote the humane and judicious use of animals in research, teaching, and testing. The Animal Care and Use Program comprises three units that support the campus-wide research community and ensure the collective commitment to the welfare of all animals under care: Animal Care and Use Office, Unit for Laboratory Animal Medicine, and Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee. This site provides information for those interested in the University of Michigan's policies regarding research which employees animals.
