Description: Blog post about how the tobacco companies have battled against the Proposition 56 ballot initiative, pouring more than $71 million to date into a campaign funding radio and TV ads that have been decried as “supremely sleazy” by the editorial board of the Mercury News, and pilloried by health advocates, the Politifact fact-checking organization and other newspapers including the Los Angeles Times. The opposition campaign, titled “No on 56: Stop the Special Interest Tax Grab,” has so far been 100 percent funded by tobacco companies, with just two companies, Philip Morris (via their affiliate, Altria) and RJ Reynolds donating n excess of $50 million. While Prop. 56 had significant support in polls taken in September, proponents worry that support is slipping under the barrage of cigarette company ads.

Two versions of the initiative were approved for circulation and both measures failed to reach the ballot in March 2016. But as of May, 2016, the initiative was alive as a combined initiated constitutional amendment and state statute. Page lists supporters and opposition as well as full text of the initiative and campaign contributions.
