Description: For 15 weeks in 1961, the University of Michigan Symphony Band went on a United States State Department cultural exchange tour of the Soviet Union, Middle East, and Eastern Europe. This remains the longest State Department sponsored tour in history and took place during the height of the Cold War. Bandmembers saw remains of Gary Powers' spy plane in Moscow but also played for thousands of citizens in those countries and established friendships that continue to this day. This website serves to chronicle and preserve the personal diaries, remembrances and photographs of the musicians who took part.
