Title: Center of Excellence in Neurobiology of Addiction, Pain, and Emotion | University of Washington

URL: https://depts.washington.edu/uwnape/

Description: The University of Washington is committed to improving the lives of people suffering from nervous system disorders that result in chronic pain, drug addiction and depression. These syndromes often go together: chronic pain can lead to over-use of opioid analgesics and feelings of depression. Use of addictive drugs often leads to depression during drug withdrawal and hypersensitivity to pain. Recognizing this challenging interplay, scientists in the Departments of Pharmacology, Anesthesiology and Psychiatry have been working together to understand how the nervous system processes sensory information and how that transmission is affected by chronic pain and mood disorders. The participating and affiliated faculty plus their lab groups meet monthly to discuss research progress, work together to train graduate students and postdoctoral fellows, and develop funded collaborative research support.

Description: The Corey Lab focuses on the pathogenesis of chronic viral infections and host immune responses. This includes herpes simplex virus type 2 (HSV-2) and HIV. The lab uses HSV as a model to study the tissue based immune system of the genital tract. Their studies indicate a diverse and unique set of tissue resident cells populate the genital tract. Their work is devoted to identifying and understanding the role of these cells in disease pathogenesis. The ultimate goal for these projects is to develop immunotherapeutic methods to control subclinical HSV-2 reactivation and reduce the transmission to sexual partners.
