Description: The UW Superfund Research Program is an interdisciplinary program that conducts and communicates research on the impacts of metal neurotoxicity on human and ecological health. Their research focuses upon metals that commonly occur at Superfund hazardous waste sites for which there are important data gaps impeding the full understanding of their neurotoxic effects on human and ecological health. The physiological processes that are studied include adverse effects on cognition, olfaction and neurobehavioral processes, and are associated with the risk of developing Alzheimer's and non-Alzheimer's related dementia, Parkinson’s disease, and other neurodevelopmental diseases. Description: Severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) is the virus that causes coronavirus disease (COVID-19). Currently, there are no FDA-approved treatments for COVID-19. Many drugs have been suggested as possible treatments, but we don’t yet know if they actually work. This study will investigate if taking hydroxychloroquine (HCQ) or HCQ plus azithromycin is beneficial for non-hospitalized people with SARS-CoV-2 infection compared to a placebo. Severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) is the virus that causes coronavirus disease (COVID-19).

Description: Palliative care, also known as palliative medicine, is specialized medical care for people living with serious illness. It focuses on providing relief from the symptoms and stress of a serious illness—whatever the diagnosis. The goal is to improve quality of life for both the patient and the family. Palliative care is provided by a team of palliative care doctors, nurses and other specialists who work together with a patient’s other doctors to provide an extra layer of support. It is appropriate at any age and at any stage in a serious illness and can be provided along with curative or life prolonging treatment. Neurology residents with strong interest in pursuing basic research projects during or following their residency can often arrange to work with a member of this faculty.

Description: The Parkinson's Genetic Research Study (PaGeR), headed by Dr. Cyrus Zabetian, is searching for genes that increase the risk of developing PD and related disorders. The study is a joint effort by neurologists and researchers across the United States and is sponsored by the National Institutes of Health. Description: The national healthcare landscape is shifting. Changes in reimbursements as well as movement from fee-for-service to value-based care and an increased focus on the health of populations are driving factors. Care transformation is essential in enabling people to adapt to these changes. The national healthcare landscape is shifting. Description: The University of Washington is committed to improving the lives of people suffering from nervous system disorders that result in chronic pain, drug addiction and depression. These syndromes often go together: chronic pain can lead to over-use of opioid analgesics and feelings of depression. Clinical depression increases the risk of developing chronic pain syndromes and over-use of addictive drugs. Use of addictive drugs often leads to depression during drug withdrawal and hypersensitivity to pain. Recognizing this challenging interplay, scientists in the Departments of Pharmacology, Anesthesiology and Psychiatry have been working together to understand how the nervous system processes sensory information and how that transmission is affected by chronic pain and mood disorders. The participating and affiliated faculty plus their lab groups meet monthly to discuss research progress, work together to train graduate students and postdoctoral fellows, and develop funded collaborative research support.
