Title: Studio Theatre

URL: http://www.studiotheatre.org/

Description: Archived website of Studio Theatre, which began in 1978 as a collaboration between Artistic Director Joy Zinoman and Designer Russell Metheny with support of arts advocate Virginia Crawford. Prior to the beginning of TST, Metheny and Zinoman had worked together on successful productions for Washingtons West End Theatre. The Studio Theatre strives to produce plays that focus on interaction between actor and audience and thus has used intimate performance spaces since its founding. In the late 1980s two more production divisions were introduced: The Studio 2ndStage and Special Events. As additions to The Studio Theatres subscription season, Special Events showcases works by performing artists without other performance opportunities in D.C. while The Studio 2ndStage produces plays which often push the boundaries of more conservative theater. In 1992, the Studio launched its Campaign to Secure the Future, an ambitious 3.5 million dollar undertaking to expand the physical space of the theatre and contribute to the revitalization of the 14th Street corridor. This successful project added two stages, numerous classrooms, and confirmed the ongoing expansion of the Studio Theatres impact. Further renovations were completed between 2002 and 2006 to update the building and improve accessibility and technological aspects of the building. Today, the Studio Theatre maintains an active relationship with the 14th street community and offers many free and affordable options for low income residents as well as partnerships with various community and youth organizations. Title: Viola da Gamba Society of America

URL: http://www.vdgsa.org/

Description: Archived website of the Viola da Gamba Society of America. Founded by George Glenn and incorporated in 1962, the Viola da Gamba Society of America (VdGSA) is a not-for-profit organization dedicated to the support of activities relating to the viola da gamba in the United States and abroad. The society is comprised of players, builders, publishers, distributors, restorers and others sharing an interest in music for viols and various other early bowed string instruments. Annually, a week-long conclave is held during mid-summer at an educational institution in the U.S. with a faculty of internationally recognized performers and scholars. The VdGSA was formed by a small nucleus of enthusiastic viol players who frequently met to play consort music in rural Maryland. The concept of an annual Conclave was born at that time, with a small enough membership to be accommodated in private homes. As numbers of members increased, Conclaves eventually began taking place in educational institutions throughout the country. It is the policy of the VdGSA to convene the Conclave in different locations as an outreach to the dispersed membership. Organizational membership totals about 1100 individuals and institutions worldwide. Aside from the national organization, there are 13 official chapters and 35 area representatives in the United States, 4 area representatives from Canada, and another 5 around the world. The VdGSA website includes information about its membership, chapters, StoryChord project, grants, programs, annual Conclave, music catalog, teaching and events video, publications, research, events, and classified ads.

URL: http://www.wapava.org/

Description: Archived website of the Washington Area Performing Arts Video Archive (WAPAVA), established in 1991 by James J. Taylor with the goal of creating and preserving a videotape collection of stage performances in the Washington D.C. area. Taylor's recordings of area theatre and dance performances from 1993 formed the bases and the bulk of the WAPAVA, which was originally stored in the Washington, D.C. Public Library system. In December of 2004, the archive was donated to the Michelle Smith Performing Arts Library. Since 1993, over 700 professional productions representing a cross-section of Washington-area theatres from large to small have been recorded. Performances are selected for consideration by an Advisory Board consisting of theatre professionals, critics, academics, and theatre lovers. Criteria for selection include historical and educational value, and special consideration is given to premieres, unique events, community interest, and contributions of particular value by performers, directors, and designers. The WAPAVA website includes a database of videos in the collection and lists of recent additions to and funding for the archive.
