Description: ACOM’s research focuses on advancing understanding and predictive capability for atmospheric composition and related processes. Research is organized around two major themes – Air Quality Prediction and Weather-Chemistry-Climate Interactions – and includes for example, a focus on issues related to the interaction of anthropogenic and biogenic chemical emissions, the effects of wildfires on air quality, and the impacts of upper troposphere/lower stratosphere (UT/LS) and middle atmosphere composition on climate. The synthesis of observations with atmospheric chemistry models is central to progress, with a focus on understanding and modeling fundamental processes. ACOM scientists work closely with the wider research community, providing intellectual leadership and facility support for measurement capabilities, laboratory and field experiments and community atmospheric chemistry models.

Description: The Climate and Human Systems Project (CHSP) is a cross-cutting research activity within the Climate and Global Dynamics Laboratory at the National Center for Atmospheric Research (NCAR). Its principal goal is to integrate research on human and earth systems to improve understanding of climate change. To pursue this goal, the project develops and coordinates interdisciplinary studies focused on climate-related topics, such as climate modeling, analysis of climate model results, integrated assessment modeling, and impact modeling, to advance the scientific frontier and provide results relevant to policy discussions. These studies involve scientists in CGD, as well as from other NCAR laboratories and the larger scientific community. The first activity undertaken by the CHSP was the project on the Benefits of Reduced Anthropogenic Climate changE (BRACE). Initiated in 2014, BRACE focused on differences in impacts resulting from climate change driven by a higher emissions and radiative forcing scenario versus a lower scenario.

Description: The Center for Ocean Leadership is the new home for programs formerly run by the Consortium for Ocean Leadership. Upon its dissolution in September 2022, certain COL programs transferred to the University Corporation for Atmospheric Research (UCAR). This transition marks a historic partnership between the oceanic and atmospheric science communities and will help researchers advance the study of Earth as an interconnected system. The programs will be housed in a new Center for Ocean Leadership (COL), which will reside within the existing UCAR Community Programs. The Center for Ocean Leadership manages, coordinates, and facilitates ocean research and education programs and areas of Ocean Exploration, Ocean Observing, and Informal education

Description: The System for Integrated Modeling of the Atmosphere (SIMA) is a unified community atmospheric modeling framework, for use in an Earth System Model, such as the Community Earth System Model (CESM). The current incarnation of SIMA enables diverse configurations of the atmosphere model inside of CESM, for applications spanning minutes to centuries and cloud to global scales, including atmospheric forecasts and projections of the atmospheric state and composition from the surface into the thermosphere. SIMA emerged as a response to recommendations from NCAR advisory panels and NSF site visit team panels that identified the opportunity for NCAR to have a more unified and integrated approach to atmospheric modeling.

Description: HFIP provides the basis for NOAA and other agencies to coordinate hurricane research needed to significantly improve guidance for hurricane track, intensity, and storm surge forecasts. It also engages and aligns the inter-agency and larger scientific community efforts towards addressing the challenges posed to improve hurricane forecasts. The goals of the HFIP are to improve the accuracy and reliability of hurricane forecasts; to extend lead time for hurricane forecasts with increased certainty; and to increase confidence in hurricane forecasts. These efforts will require major investments in enhanced observational strategies, improved data assimilation, numerical model systems, and expanded forecast applications based on the high resolution and ensemble-based numerical prediction systems. NCAR hosts the site on behalf of the HFIP project.

Description: The Integrated Assessment Modeling (IAM) group, within the Climate and Global Dynamics Laboratory at the National Center for Atmospheric Research (NCAR), develops and applies integrated models of human and earth systems to help understand how key aspects of society may evolve in the future and how they might interact with a changing climate. Anticipating how society might change in the future, in addition to climate, is critical to examining the consequences of and possible responses to climate change. To address this need, the IAM group aims to: Improve projections of societal trends relevant to assessing climate impacts, mitigation, and adaptation; Improve the capacity to link integrated assessment models to NCAR’s Community Earth System Model (CESM) to investigate human-earth system interactions; and Improve assessments of impacts, adaptation, and mitigation by better accounting for socio-economic change and its interactions with the climate systems. Established in 2009 as part of NCAR’s former Integrated Science Program, the IAM group employs an interdisciplinary research staff with expertise in land use and agricultural impacts, energy systems modeling, and demographic and household behavior. IAM researchers also collaborate closely with experts in economics, software engineering, land surface modeling, and urbanization and health impacts.

Description: The In-Situ Sensing Facility (ISF) provides measurements made directly in the environment as well as profiling measurements of the lower atmosphere. Measurements are made in-situ at the earth's surface, on towers, on balloons, and on packages dropped from aircraft. Remote profiling measurements are made using vertically pointing radar, lidar and acoustic sensors. The ISF is part of the Earth Observing Laboratory (EOL). This is an early version of the project sites. More information on EOL field projects can be found at: https://www.eol.ucar.edu/node/3213
