Description: MOPITT is an instrument flying on NASA's Earth Observing System Terra spacecraft, measuring tropospheric carbon monoxide (CO) on the global scale. MOPITT measurements enable scientists to analyze the distribution, transport, sources and sinks of CO, a trace gas produced by methane oxidation, fossil fuel consumption and biomass burning.

Description: ACD Scientists use TIMED observations along with a hierarchy of numerical models to investigate the global environment in the mesosphere and lower thermosphere (MLT) region. Particular emphasis is placed on the region's composition and chemistry and their impact on the energetics. The models are used to attempt to reproduce the observations, to conduct sensitivity tests to answer scientific questions, and to produce realistic simulations of fields that are not measured or only partially measured by TIMED. A combination of mechanistic models and Global Climate Models (GCMs) are used depending on the type of investigation and length of model integration. They are somewhat modular so that addition or modification of selected physical or chemical processes is facilitated.

Description: The Whole Atmosphere Community Climate Model (WACCM) is a comprehensive numerical model, spanning the range of altitude from the Earth's surface to the thermosphere. The development of WACCM is an inter-divisional collaboration that unifies certain aspects of the upper atmospheric modeling of HAO, the middle atmosphere modeling of ACD, and the tropospheric modeling of CGD, using the NCAR Community Earth System Model (CESM) as a common numerical framework.

Description: ACOM’s research focuses on advancing understanding and predictive capability for atmospheric composition and related processes. Research is organized around two major themes – Air Quality Prediction and Weather-Chemistry-Climate Interactions – and includes for example, a focus on issues related to the interaction of anthropogenic and biogenic chemical emissions, the effects of wildfires on air quality, and the impacts of upper troposphere/lower stratosphere (UT/LS) and middle atmosphere composition on climate. The synthesis of observations with atmospheric chemistry models is central to progress, with a focus on understanding and modeling fundamental processes. ACOM scientists work closely with the wider research community, providing intellectual leadership and facility support for measurement capabilities, laboratory and field experiments and community atmospheric chemistry models.
