Description: ACD Scientists use TIMED observations along with a hierarchy of numerical models to investigate the global environment in the mesosphere and lower thermosphere (MLT) region. Particular emphasis is placed on the region's composition and chemistry and their impact on the energetics. The models are used to attempt to reproduce the observations, to conduct sensitivity tests to answer scientific questions, and to produce realistic simulations of fields that are not measured or only partially measured by TIMED. A combination of mechanistic models and Global Climate Models (GCMs) are used depending on the type of investigation and length of model integration. They are somewhat modular so that addition or modification of selected physical or chemical processes is facilitated.

Description: The TOPSE investigation combined model studies and simulations with a set of chemical and photochemical measurements taken over the critical winter-spring transition in the northern mid-to-high latitude troposphere. The overall goal of the experiment was to investigate the chemical and dynamic evolution of tropospheric chemical composition over mid- to high-latitude continental North America during the winter/spring transition; a particular emphasis was placed on the springtime ozone maximum in the troposphere. As the experiment progressed additional effort was used to investigate dramatic ozone depletion events found over large regions of the Arctic surface layer. The Tropospheric Ozone Production about the Spring Equinox took place in 2000 in Colorado, Greenland, and Manitoba.

URL: http://www.cgd.ucar.edu/iam/

Description: The Integrated Assessment Modeling (IAM) group, within the Climate and Global Dynamics Laboratory at the National Center for Atmospheric Research (NCAR), develops and applies integrated models of human and earth systems to help understand how key aspects of society may evolve in the future and how they might interact with a changing climate. Anticipating how society might change in the future, in addition to climate, is critical to examining the consequences of and possible responses to climate change. To address this need, the IAM group aims to: Improve projections of societal trends relevant to assessing climate impacts, mitigation, and adaptation; Improve the capacity to link integrated assessment models to NCAR’s Community Earth System Model (CESM) to investigate human-earth system interactions; and Improve assessments of impacts, adaptation, and mitigation by better accounting for socio-economic change and its interactions with the climate systems. Established in 2009 as part of NCAR’s former Integrated Science Program, the IAM group employs an interdisciplinary research staff with expertise in land use and agricultural impacts, energy systems modeling, and demographic and household behavior. IAM researchers also collaborate closely with experts in economics, software engineering, land surface modeling, and urbanization and health impacts.

Its principal goal is to integrate research on human and earth systems to improve understanding of climate change. To pursue this goal, the project develops and coordinates interdisciplinary studies focused on climate-related topics, such as climate modeling, analysis of climate model results, integrated assessment modeling, and impact modeling, to advance the scientific frontier and provide results relevant to policy discussions. These studies involve scientists in CGD, as well as from other NCAR laboratories and the larger scientific community. The first activity undertaken by the CHSP was the project on the Benefits of Reduced Anthropogenic Climate changE (BRACE). Initiated in 2014, BRACE focused on differences in impacts resulting from climate change driven by a higher emissions and radiative forcing scenario versus a lower scenario.
