Description: "The field of biomedical science is undergoing rapid transformation with a new focus on interdisciplinary collaborations across many scientific and technical disciplines, including biology, chemistry, physics, nano biotechnology, clinical medicine, applied mathematics and computer science. Innovative interdisciplinary partnerships hold dramatic potential for the development of new discoveries and technologies, less-invasive and more-targeted therapies, and advanced medical devices, diagnostics, and imaging. Intercampus research can also include collaborations with disciplines outside of the sciences, including public policy, communication, and others. Cornell University is committed to supporting these types of interdisciplinary collaborations across its many campuses by creating and supporting new opportunities, making it easy for researchers to find opportunities, and by eliminating the administrative burdens related to managing such projects throughout their lifecycle."

Description: "The Beltran lab is focused on understanding mechanisms of treatment resistance in advanced prostate cancer through integration of clinical and molecular features of patients combined with preclinical modeling. We have focused on understanding mechanisms underlying an emerging subclass of androgen-indifferent prostate cancers that develop neuroendocrine features as an adaptive response mechanism upon selective therapeutic pressure of the androgen receptor (AR). We have used genomics and epigenomics to elucidate the molecular mechanisms driving evolution towards an AR-low state. We are developing tissue and circulating biomarkers and novel therapeutic strategies for clinical translation. Our mission is to make discoveries that improve the way we manage and treat patients with advanced prostate cancer."

Description: "Founded in 2015, the Englander Institute’s primary mission is to uncover the molecular roots of disease using genomic sequencing, informatics, and other technologies. This information is then used to personalize disease treatment and prevention. To achieve this, computational biologists first analyze tumor sequencing data and summarize the key clinical and genetic findings. Then, a team of interdisciplinary specialists, including pathologists, molecular biologists, oncologists and basic scientists use these findings to determine the best treatment options for each patient. Precision medicine targeted individualized care is tailored to each patient based on his or her specific genetic profile and medical history. Unlike the traditional one-size-fits-all medicine, practitioners of precision medicine use genomic sequencing tools to interrogate a patient’s entire genome to locate the specific genetic alterations that have given rise to and are driving his or her tumor. With this information, they can identify small molecule drugs, monoclonal antibodies, vaccines, and other therapies that are most precisely targeted and are therefore most effective and have the fewest side effects."

The Center motto “Putting Research into Action” guides its mission to generate knowledge, techniques, and tools to improve medical care of seriously ill patients and the people who love them. The Center has had remarkable success in its first two years of existence. It obtained over $12 million dollars in NIH Funding for grants ranging from a seven-year Outstanding Investigator award, to large multi-site prospective studies, exploratory and small grants, and scientist development awards from our core faculty members. To date five medical students have been awarded grants to receive research training on projects as varied as studies of the severity of suffering and challenges to effective symptom management in the Intensive Care Unit, to studies of ways to improve physician communication about patient prognosis and test results, and research to enhance the quality of life and adjustment of family caregivers and bereaved survivors."
