Description: The General Assembly created the State Office of Victim Assistance with in 1982 (Act 455). The program originated as the Victims Compensation Fund. It was created to establish a program to compensate victims of crime and certain other persons who have suffered as a result of crime. It was administered by the Office of the Governor and transferred to the Dept. of Administration in 2015 by the South Carolina Restructuring Act of 2014 (Act 121). The General Assembly transferred the State Office of Victim Assistance (SOVA) and the Office of the Crime Victims' Ombudsman to the Office of the Attorney General's South Carolina Crime Victim Services Division on July 1, 2017 (Act 96).
