description: Spring 1921 - Tamalpais' engine No. 9, the last locomotive purchased by the scenic railway, poses for a photo in at the Heisler Locomotive Works, Erie, Pennsylvania, just before beginning it’s cross country journey to Mill Valley and Mt. Tamalpais. This custom built, 36-ton locomotive was an early example of an "all-wheel drive" vehicle. All the wheels were interlocked. That was very important for a mountain-climbing steam engine.
