Description: "Morningside Heights has a rich history which is embodied in its buildings, green spaces and streetscapes. These elements contribute to a sense of place and certain expectations about our quality of life, and proportions of residential and commercial use. Protecting these attributes along with our social, and architectural history is the goal of the Morningside Heights Historic District Committee. To achieve this end we are seeking a historic designation by the Landmarks Preservation Commission."

Description: "The St. Mark's Historic Landmark Fund was founded by a group of concerned citizens in 1979 following a devastating fire at St. Mark's Church In-the-Bowery, a remarkable East Village ensemble of buildings and landscaped property dating back to 1799. Originally founded as the Friends of St. Mark's in 1975, which became the Citizens to Save St. Mark's and then formalized as the St. Mark's Historic Landmark Fund, the volunteer organization raised over $2.5 million after a fire in 1978 to support an ambitious renewal project and--in a program that drew national attention--rebuilt the church."

Description: "A recent spate of development threatens to change the face of our historic community with luxury housing. From the new apartments on the grounds of St. John the Divine to the former nurses residence diagonally across the street, to what's going up at Jewish Theological Seminary and Union Theological Seminary, our neighborhood is changing, and not for the better. To look into these developments, MHHDC decided to initiate the Morningside Heights Community Coalition (MHCC). This new organization consists of community groups in MSH and individual coops throughout the neighborhood who are working together to try and have an impact on these projects."

Description: "The preservation of Tin Pan Alley, 28th Street between Broadway and 6th Avenue, was aided for many years by the absence of development in that area of New York City...With the recent rise in popularity and development of the area, this has all changed ... all of the remaining buildings that constitute Tin Pan Alley--45, 47, 49, 51, 53, and 55 West 28th Street, have been sold as a parcel to a real estate developer. Because of the large size of the parcel and the buyer’s experience in New York City real estate development, it is likely that all of Tin Pan Alley will be demolished to make room for high-rise development in the near future."
