Description: Coursework at World Languages and Cultures (WLC) at American University taught in the target language provides solid language skills and depth of cultural understanding in Arabic, Chinese, French, German, Hebrew, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Portuguese, Russian, Spanish and Swahili. Instruction for individuals interested in teaching English to non-English speakers is provided through the TESOL Program (Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages). WLC offers an online Language Placement Test to help students find appropriate classes, in addition to one-on-one Undergraduate Advising.

IMI consults with organizations across sectors and trains personnel to recognize and manage cultural differences, using them as positive leverage in the global marketplace. We provide academic courses, workshops, symposia and conferences covering a wide-range of topics dealing with intercultural relations.

Description: The School of Professional and Extended Studies (SPEXS) offers the Washington Semester Summer Internship Program to college students around the U.S. The internship program provides students with internships and experiential courses that connect professional experiences with academic coursework. Students gain insights from knowledgeable faculty mentors who help the students find an internship, orient themselves in the city, and provide guidance and advice throughout the semester. Students can earn three to six undergraduate or graduate credits in the Washington Semester Summer Internship Program.

Developed in response to the White House Initiative on American Indians and Alaska Natives, this enriching program offers qualified students full scholarships funded by American University and sponsoring organizations. WINS students gain professional work experience through internships at a federal agency or private firm, take courses focusing on Native American public policy concerns, and enjoy engaging social and cultural extra-curricular activities.
