The purpose of this employee resource group is to serve as a collective that supports and advocates for Black employees at the university. In addition, through advocacy and collaborative efforts, BFSA exists to enhance communication and champion diversity, inclusion, opportunity, and social justice, while challenging racism, within the University, with our Black alumni and the broader Black community.

Description: The UofL Women’s Center serves as a catalyst for empowering women at UofL and throughout the Louisville area. It is a resource on women’s issues and works to promote an atmosphere of diversity for students, faculty, staff and the community. The Women’s Center was established in 1991 and comes under the purview of the Office of the President in the Office of Diversity and Equity. It carries out its mission by supporting the vision of the Office of Diversity and International Affairs, particularly as it relates to the multidimensional realities of women’s lives; educating university policy makers, students, faculty, staff and community members regarding issues that affect women; assisting the university in achieving its retention and graduation goals by implementing programs that enhance, support and empower women on campus; and facilitating student development that affirms students’ identities through leadership, mentoring and personal and professional development opportunities.

Description: In 2003, the University of Louisville and Jewish Hospital partnered to create the Cardiovascular Innovation Institute (CII) with the goal of fostering a world-class, collaborative, integrated, multi-disciplinary enterprise encompassing basic, translational, and clinical and population research in cardiovascular disease. Through initial funding provided by Jewish Hospital and St. Mary’s HealthCare, the University of Louisville, Kosair Charities, the Kentucky Cabinet for Economic Development and the Department of Commercialization and Innovation, the Gheens Foundation and federal appropriations, a state-of-the-art building opened in January 2007. This research center brings together leaders in the field with the goal of improving the quality of life for patients with cardiovascular disease. In October 2019, the University of Louisville took sole ownership of the CII.

Description: The Commission on Diversity and Racial Equality (CODRE) was established in 1998 by University of Louisville President John Shumaker to promote a campus culture of inclusion and engagement. The Commission’s role in diversity related activities includes serving as the president’s policy advisor on issues of diversity at the University; making recommendations to the president for the development or revision of initiatives to make the University a more inclusive community and reporting the progress of these initiatives; developing strategic and tactical actions in cooperation with the Commission on the Status of Women to improve the learning and working environments at the University, supporting crucial dialog and efforts to promote cultural values and diverse perspectives that characterize the United States and that must be reflected in the University; serving as a resource to members of the president’s staff, executive cabinet, and individual units that seek assistance and advice with diversity and inclusion initiatives; recognizing and supporting staff and faculty who have made outstanding contributions in advancing diversity; developing and supporting programming to augment student learning and research.

Description: The Martin Luther King Scholars participate in an engaging leadership development program while enrolled at the University of Louisville. This mentored scholar program includes a scholarship, which is awarded annually to ten African American or Latino high school graduates from Kentucky or Southern Indiana. MLK Scholars participate in a program designed to develop critical thinking skills, engage in self exploration, and establish an appreciation for civic engagement. MLK Scholars live in an Honors Service Living Learning Community throughout their first year, enroll in courses focused on social justice and peace studies, engage in experiential learning through community service initiatives, and, during the second year, participate in a civil rights immersion travel experience. The program includes full in-state tuition plus a stipend to cover other university expenses. A minimum high school GPA of 3.5 and ACT score of 26 (SAT 1230) are required to apply.

Description: Brown Fellows is a scholarship program that provides a diverse group of students the opportunity to build leadership skills through academic enrichment, expanded opportunity, and personal accountability. It is open to residents and non-residents of Kentucky with a 31 ACT or 1390 SAT and 3.5 GPA with ten Fellows selected each year. Recipients have diverse academic interests, are well-rounded, and show evidence of leadership potential. The scholarship award includes full tuition, room, board, and an allowance for books. In addition, each fellow applies for funding from the Brown Foundation to support their individual enrichment plan, which consists of specialized study, research, internships, service, or other opportunities that advance the student toward his or her goals.
