COVID-19: Vancouver Island, BC (Central & North)

Collected by: Vancouver Island University

Archived since: Mar, 2020

Description:

In March 2020 the Canadian Web Archiving Coalition (CWAC) stated: "The deadly flu outbreak of 1918-19 is often called the ‘forgotten pandemic.’ Our responsibility now is to ensure the lessons of COVID-19 are not forgotten. Our collective efforts to capture and preserve the essential online elements of this unprecedented event are critical." (CARL-ABRC). The COVID-19: Vancouver Island, BC (Central & North) Web Archive reflects community experiences and responses to the pandemic in the region served by Vancouver Island University, documenting and supporting diverse aspects of scholarly inquiry, creativity, and community life. The Web Archive is intended to provide a body of information that will support scholarship, creativity, and study. Information rights related to web archiving include considerations of copyright and fair dealing, and of individual and community privacy. The following are among principles and resources that guide web archiving decisions: Ethics of care, for example in VIU Library’s Pledge to our user communities; OCAP® principles, and awareness of relationality and accountability to Indigenous communities, and potential impacts related to web archiving; Good practice and expert advice, emerging and accessed through communities of practice, e.g. the Canadian Web Archiving Coalition (CWAC); and VIU Library, Evolution of Physical Collections: 2017-2021 VIU Library, Special Collections Guidelines (Under review 2020). Web archives are informed by available capture technologies and also by affordances of the content source; not all websites can be successfully crawled or rendered, and quality of archived versions varies. This project is supported by VIU's Special Funding for COVID-19 research projects and carried out in coordination with the University of Victoria’s COVID-19 Collection and the Canadian Web Archiving Coalition. URL: https://pbs.twimg.com/media/FFyYB_BUYAM_tRM?format=jpg&name=medium

Description: Lindsay Brown on Twitter: "This is a call out for staff for Vancouver Island vaccine clinics. It's incredible - so in short, they might have some people in these positions in 10 days? At the fastest? And this was only posted internally? What's going on, @AdrianDix @CDCofBC ? #bcpoli / Meanwhile BC kids' vaccine clinics are closed for a long stretch over the holidays, with #Omicron coming, and showing up strongly in kids in South Africa? And when they're open, in some areas kids are only vaccinated Fri-Sun? / BC booster rollout is so slow I've heard docs & nurses I know wonder if a circulating theory might be true, that @CDCofBC is studying long vax intervals vs case #s, hence the delay. They (& I) are 100% non-conspiratorial generally. But CDC does have history of this sort of study. / I don't even want to contemplate a study that unethical, that frankly criminal. As a friend pointed out, population-wide medical studies cannot cause harm. I bring this up to show the talk CDC is exposing itself to, & how deep HCWs are digging to explain the inexplicable delays."

Description: POP BC Briefing #7: Omicron in BC – PoP Response Panel to Government Press Conferences December 31, 2021 Omicron has sent case numbers to their highest levels yet, even with limited testing. There are many issues to be addressed, including: Omicron – How mild is it? Can we live with it? N95 masks for healthcare workers, including at vaccination clinics – why is this important? BC Third Dose roll out – Let’s talk intervals since last vaccine and, who should be prioritized? Is it ethical to allow healthcare workers to work while sick? Testing in BC – update on the ongoing saga of RATs (rapid antigen tests) – is usage for diagnosis an effective strategy? What are other ways to manage Omicron spread and avoid “inevitable” infection? Schools – are the “Enhanced Safety Measures” enough for Omicron? Reaction to announcements and comments made during the December 31 COVID-19 update Protect our Province BC hosted a panel of steering committee members to discuss and provide a response to Government and Public Health’s most recent COVID-19 updates from this week, those held on December 29 and 31. Members of the press and the public were invited to ask questions following the discussion.

URL: https://twitter.com/Lidsville/status/1546226518073847808/

Description: Lindsay Brown on Twitter: "I'm just curious what most British Columbians think is causing BC Ferries to keep cancelling multiple sailings, Air Canada to cancel 9500 flights this summer, & ER waits of up to 16 hrs? Obvs not something that could be prevented by an indoor mask rule, eh @adriandix ? #bcpoli / Since this is taking off, FYI you can actually get your 2nd booster in BC now - even though they are saying no & trying to name it the "fall booster" to distract from the fact people are past the 6 month interval - by calling this number & demanding an appointment: 1-833-838-2323 / We have a BC govt doing zero on the pandemic file other than vaccines, while delaying a needed second booster to chase some unknown future update designed for BA.5 when BA.5 will have been replaced by then, when masks are right in front of them. Negligent. / It's funny how many people on this thread are coming up with other explanations for the travel cancellations and hospital waits. Yes, we have starved/mismanaged our critical systems & services for years. And yes, it's still Covid that is breaking them this extravagantly. / The Mystery Staff Shortage of 2022 That Is Not Related to Covid In Any Way"

Description: Brishti Basu on Twitter: "Latest for @CapitalDailyVic : I spoke to two doctors who work in Island Health/#yyj hospitals who say public health has not communicated any plans regarding what will happen when the predicted surge of #omicron cases hits BC hospitals: / Hospitals across the Island are nearly full already & care is already being compromised due to shortages @bcCOVID19group modelling shows even in best case scenario, BC expects 700 hospitalizations and 400 ICU by Jan 8 (For context, today there were 195 active cases in hospital) / “It’s a double whammy because not only are we over-capacity for patients, we’re short-staffed on nurses,” said @AmyTanMD “People are burnt out, people have retired, people have quit. It's actually worse than March 2020 because the system is so burnt out from two years of this. / With more #omicron patients on the way, she and James, an emergency physician at VGH and Jubilee, fear more and more healthcare workers will get infected. Consequences: more nurse/doctor shortages while they isolate + staff inadvertently spreading COVID to other patients. / One simple step they want, which ON and AB have taken: N95 masks for hospital staff to wear when in contact with COVID-positive or suspected COVID-positive patients. To do this, BC public health would have to acknowledge airborne transmission. / Anecdotally, more HCWs have been infected recently than before. But, James says, public health still says transmission doesn't happen at hospitals. The lack of adequate PPE is contributing to heightened risk + HCWs feeling like govt and public health don't have their back. / “We know if the virus is transmitted in the air, it doesn't matter where you are,” James said. “The virus doesn't know whether you're in church or whether you're in a gym or whether you're in a shopping mall, or in a restaurant.” Full story: #COVID19BC"

Not sure if this disjointed approach is also happening in other health authorities. 4/4"
