COVID-19: Vancouver Island, BC (Central & North)

Collected by: Vancouver Island University

Archived since: Mar, 2020

Description:

In March 2020 the Canadian Web Archiving Coalition (CWAC) stated: "The deadly flu outbreak of 1918-19 is often called the ‘forgotten pandemic.’ Our responsibility now is to ensure the lessons of COVID-19 are not forgotten. Our collective efforts to capture and preserve the essential online elements of this unprecedented event are critical." (CARL-ABRC). The COVID-19: Vancouver Island, BC (Central & North) Web Archive reflects community experiences and responses to the pandemic in the region served by Vancouver Island University, documenting and supporting diverse aspects of scholarly inquiry, creativity, and community life. The Web Archive is intended to provide a body of information that will support scholarship, creativity, and study. Information rights related to web archiving include considerations of copyright and fair dealing, and of individual and community privacy. The following are among principles and resources that guide web archiving decisions: Ethics of care, for example in VIU Library’s Pledge to our user communities; OCAP® principles, and awareness of relationality and accountability to Indigenous communities, and potential impacts related to web archiving; Good practice and expert advice, emerging and accessed through communities of practice, e.g. the Canadian Web Archiving Coalition (CWAC); and VIU Library, Evolution of Physical Collections: 2017-2021 VIU Library, Special Collections Guidelines (Under review 2020). Web archives are informed by available capture technologies and also by affordances of the content source; not all websites can be successfully crawled or rendered, and quality of archived versions varies. This project is supported by VIU's Special Funding for COVID-19 research projects and carried out in coordination with the University of Victoria’s COVID-19 Collection and the Canadian Web Archiving Coalition. Contact us at research.help@viu.ca with questions or for more information about content included in the Web Archive. [Working description 2021 April 6]

Title: An open letter from Protect Our Province BC to BC Health Minister Adrian Dix and BC Chief Provincial Health Officer Dr. Bonnie Henry | December 21, 2021 | Protect Our Province BC

Description: Omicron moves faster than any virus we’ve ever seen. If the BC government continues to take a “wait and see” approach, it will inevitably result in a “too little, too late” public health strategy. So how can BC residents help to reduce the strain on the healthcare system?

Description: Sonia Furstenau on Twitter: "This chapter of the pandemic has me the most worried. When we should be treating this pandemic and the Delta variant with the utmost seriousness, we are seeing increasing cases in schools, lack of support for unhoused people w/ COVID, and increasing community division. 1/ #bcpoli / Some will not get vaccinated, & we can’t ignore them. We have to protect them & their communities w strong public health measures like masks, ventilation, filtration, & effective contact tracing. We need better communications & transparency to bring them in, not shut them out. 2/ / We need masks for K-3 students, filtration and ventilation, and resources available to learn remotely whenever requested. COVID is already in our schools and spreading amongst our kids, it is not too late to prevent further transmission. 3/ #bcpoli / Lastly, we need to consider implementing an independent COVID-19 advisory panel that acts as a backstop for government data to increase credibility and trust. This gov’t has been burdened for 18 months, & this could support their hard work. 4/ #bcpoli"

Title: [Comments on how BC government provides COVID-19 data]

URL: https://twitter.com/j_mcelroy/status/1423032753822466049

Description: Justin McElroy on Twitter: "Every day somebody asks if there is info on new cases/hospitalizations by vaccination status. The government doesn't provide that data with any regularity, as they always lag behind other jurisdictions in transparency of new pandemic metrics. If I had the data, I would share. / The same things that we talked about in the last week still hold: - You are at much decreased risk with two shots - The variant is very transmissible and without new restrictions cases should grow - Hospitalizations/deaths will be much lower this wave - It's still a pandemic / While we have evidence from other countries that 4th wave Delta surges plateau at a lower level than 2nd or 3rd wave, we still don't have data on how much lower they will go. And we have reopening up of schools and universities in a month. Choices ahead for the government."

URL: https://www.straight.com/covid-19-pandemic/living/confused-by-bc-governments-approach-to-containing-spread-of-covid-19-here-are-three-papers/

Description: As K-12 students are about to return to classrooms and thousands of university students move into dormitories, there are growing fears of a new wave of COVID-19 because of the lack of a provincewide indoor mask mandate and the lack of public education about airborne transmission. With that in mind, I'm sharing the results of three studies published this year in peer-reviewed journals.
