COVID-19: Vancouver Island, BC (Central & North)

Collected by: Vancouver Island University

Archived since: Mar, 2020

Description:

In March 2020 the Canadian Web Archiving Coalition (CWAC) stated: "The deadly flu outbreak of 1918-19 is often called the ‘forgotten pandemic.’ Our responsibility now is to ensure the lessons of COVID-19 are not forgotten. Our collective efforts to capture and preserve the essential online elements of this unprecedented event are critical." (CARL-ABRC). The COVID-19: Vancouver Island, BC (Central & North) Web Archive reflects community experiences and responses to the pandemic in the region served by Vancouver Island University, documenting and supporting diverse aspects of scholarly inquiry, creativity, and community life. The Web Archive is intended to provide a body of information that will support scholarship, creativity, and study. Information rights related to web archiving include considerations of copyright and fair dealing, and of individual and community privacy. The following are among principles and resources that guide web archiving decisions: Ethics of care, for example in VIU Library’s Pledge to our user communities; OCAP® principles, and awareness of relationality and accountability to Indigenous communities, and potential impacts related to web archiving; Good practice and expert advice, emerging and accessed through communities of practice, e.g. the Canadian Web Archiving Coalition (CWAC); and VIU Library, Evolution of Physical Collections: 2017-2021 VIU Library, Special Collections Guidelines (Under review 2020). Web archives are informed by available capture technologies and also by affordances of the content source; not all websites can be successfully crawled or rendered, and quality of archived versions varies. This project is supported by VIU's Special Funding for COVID-19 research projects and carried out in coordination with the University of Victoria’s COVID-19 Collection and the Canadian Web Archiving Coalition. Contact us at research.help@viu.ca with questions or for more information about content included in the Web Archive. [Working description 2021 April 6]

URL: https://pbs.twimg.com/media/FFyYB_BUYAM_tRM?format=jpg&name=medium

Description: Lindsay Brown on Twitter: "This is a call out for staff for Vancouver Island vaccine clinics. It's incredible - so in short, they might have some people in these positions in 10 days? At the fastest? And this was only posted internally? What's going on, @AdrianDix @CDCofBC ? #bcpoli / Meanwhile BC kids' vaccine clinics are closed for a long stretch over the holidays, with #Omicron coming, and showing up strongly in kids in South Africa? And when they're open, in some areas kids are only vaccinated Fri-Sun? / BC booster rollout is so slow I've heard docs & nurses I know wonder if a circulating theory might be true, that @CDCofBC is studying long vax intervals vs case #s, hence the delay. They (& I) are 100% non-conspiratorial generally. But CDC does have history of this sort of study. / I don't even want to contemplate a study that unethical, that frankly criminal. As a friend pointed out, population-wide medical studies cannot cause harm. I bring this up to show the talk CDC is exposing itself to, & how deep HCWs are digging to explain the inexplicable delays."

URL: https://twitter.com/CDCofBC/status/1487179039450279939/

Description: BC Centre for Disease Control on Twitter: "Two years ago the first case of #COVID19 was detected in BC. @VCHhealthcare @Fraserhealth @VanIslandHealth @Interior_Health @Northern_Health @fnha @phsaofbc have worked tirelessly to prevent infections, vaccinate, and care for those who become ill. Here’s a look back: 1/12 / Our provincial labs have played a critical role in the pandemic. Becky Hickman and Tracy Lee from the BCCDC Public Health Lab developed the first test to detect COVID-19. 2/12 / Lab staff worked around the clock to do testing and sequence positive samples to identify variants. 3/12 / Resource after resource was developed to help make sense of COVID-19 and public health information on testing, self-isolation, vaccination, and more. Some even got turned into billboards. 4/12 / A saline gargle test was developed to make testing easier for everyone but especially kids and parents. 5/12 / What started as a research project to use wastewater to monitor infection levels in the community has grown into an established program. 6/12 / The BCCDC’s COVID-19 Rapid Response Team was set up to provide test results and support health authorities with contact tracing and vaccine clinics across the province. 7/12 / Epidemiologists and data scientists spend hours every day behind-the-scenes to monitor, track and analyze the billions of pieces of data from testing, cases, vaccinations, and more. 8/12 / Guidelines have been written and training and education has been developed to support health care professionals in managing COVID-19 cases and providing immunizations. 9/12 / Meanwhile naloxone kits and harm reduction supplies continued to be delivered across the province at record-breaking numbers to help prevent deaths from drug toxicity. More people are dying from toxic unregulated drugs than ever before. 10/12 / We are so grateful for the dedication of health-care workers around the province who have stepped up in helping us to navigate these public health emergencies. 11/12 / And a big thank you to every British Columbian from us @cdcofbc Blue heart 12/12"

URL: https://twitter.com/katiederosayyj/status/1390825013989703683?s=20

Description: Katie DeRosa on Twitter: "To sum up the press conference in response to leaked @CDCofBC reports, BC’s top two public health officers were basically gaslighting journalists, insisting the #COVID19 data we’ve been asking for has been there all along if we only looked hard enough. Not true. #bcpoli / Data experts & epidemiologists such as @vb_jens Carolin Colijn, Sarah Otto & @Dr_Conway_VIDC have been sounding the alarm for months about how BC falls behind other provinces in terms of data transparency, specially re neighbourhood-level data, data broken down by race. #bcpoli / One small example of data gap. I asked Health pretty much for two weeks straight for # of P1 variant cases in Whistler to see whether numbers spiked after outbreak first declared. By the time they were offered, it was after mass vaccinations had dealt with the outbreak. #bcpoli / Also, if Health released daily data on the evolution of P.1 variant cases in Whistler over time, from start of outbreak, to peak, to a decline as vaccines were rolled out, it would give a clear picture of the effectiveness of mass vaccinations and could ease vaccine hesitancy."
