COVID-19: Vancouver Island, BC (Central & North)

Collected by: Vancouver Island University

Archived since: Mar, 2020

Description:

In March 2020 the Canadian Web Archiving Coalition (CWAC) stated: "The deadly flu outbreak of 1918-19 is often called the ‘forgotten pandemic.’ Our responsibility now is to ensure the lessons of COVID-19 are not forgotten. Our collective efforts to capture and preserve the essential online elements of this unprecedented event are critical." (CARL-ABRC). The COVID-19: Vancouver Island, BC (Central & North) Web Archive reflects community experiences and responses to the pandemic in the region served by Vancouver Island University, documenting and supporting diverse aspects of scholarly inquiry, creativity, and community life. The Web Archive is intended to provide a body of information that will support scholarship, creativity, and study. Information rights related to web archiving include considerations of copyright and fair dealing, and of individual and community privacy. The following are among principles and resources that guide web archiving decisions: Ethics of care, for example in VIU Library’s Pledge to our user communities; OCAP® principles, and awareness of relationality and accountability to Indigenous communities, and potential impacts related to web archiving; Good practice and expert advice, emerging and accessed through communities of practice, e.g. the Canadian Web Archiving Coalition (CWAC); and VIU Library, Evolution of Physical Collections: 2017-2021 VIU Library, Special Collections Guidelines (Under review 2020). Web archives are informed by available capture technologies and also by affordances of the content source; not all websites can be successfully crawled or rendered, and quality of archived versions varies. This project is supported by VIU's Special Funding for COVID-19 research projects and carried out in coordination with the University of Victoria’s COVID-19 Collection and the Canadian Web Archiving Coalition. Contact us at research.help@viu.ca with questions or for more information about content included in the Web Archive. [Working description 2021 April 6]

Description: Trapped in Covid Ground Hog Day on Twitter: ". @SoniaFurstenau @ElizabethMay @AMacGregor4CML @VIHA @VIUniversity How is it possible with the numbers of schools & #VIU campus in #Cowichan that we now have no #VIHA testing sites for #COVID19? Surely that’s a mistake? If not, something needs to be done ASAP!"

Title: [Cowichan Secondary students test positive for COVID-19]

URL: https://twitter.com/jhengstler/status/1482140265599012870/

Description: Trapped in Covid Ground Hog Day on Twitter: "Neighbor’s son attends #CowichanHigh —in Duncan —tested #COVID19 positive ( 2xRAT results positive) after small teen gathering with 4 more teens positive. Told parents to contact @BCschoolCovid on Facebook via private message. Kid’s exposure was likely Sunday. / Dropped off box of #kn95s along with info on how likely biggest threat for them is shared air; kid has own room—now with fan set up blowing air out. Nearby bathroom—told them he needs to mask any time leaving bedroom for bathroom; feed him on paper plates & disposable cutlery… / Keep garbage bag in room for contaminated paper plates, used tissues masks etc They took screen out so can be dropped out window for later pick up. If parent needs to go in bedrm -#kn95s needed, etc. Masks good for 8hrs use; kid should hang & not handle mask or leave lying around / Was in town & saw more #kn95s for sale—called neighbor & asked if he wanted more. He had me pick up 2 boxes. Store has them behind the counter now, so you have to get them at register."

Title: [Questions about rapid antigen tests for Cowichan Valley students]

URL: https://twitter.com/jhengstler/status/1485729691516375040/

Description: Trapped in Covid Ground Hog Day on Twitter: ". @SoniaFurstenau @AMacGregor4CML Can you look into why #VIHA might be actively dissuading school communities from providing donated #rapidtests even to SYMPTOMATIC students & families in Cowichan Valley when they can’t get them elsewhere right now? @CowichanCitizen @PennyDaflos / Please ask #VIHA about messaging sent to school admin in #CowichanValley about possible school community funded (via families or community donations) provision of #rapidtests when they health authorities are no longer providing them! / And why not allow school communities to self source #rapidtests especially now that your constituents’ #CowichanValley has its first functional closure for #COVID19 ? 👇"
