COVID-19: Vancouver Island, BC (Central & North)

Collected by: Vancouver Island University

Archived since: Mar, 2020

Description:

In March 2020 the Canadian Web Archiving Coalition (CWAC) stated: "The deadly flu outbreak of 1918-19 is often called the ‘forgotten pandemic.’ Our responsibility now is to ensure the lessons of COVID-19 are not forgotten. Our collective efforts to capture and preserve the essential online elements of this unprecedented event are critical." (CARL-ABRC). The COVID-19: Vancouver Island, BC (Central & North) Web Archive reflects community experiences and responses to the pandemic in the region served by Vancouver Island University, documenting and supporting diverse aspects of scholarly inquiry, creativity, and community life. The Web Archive is intended to provide a body of information that will support scholarship, creativity, and study. Information rights related to web archiving include considerations of copyright and fair dealing, and of individual and community privacy. The following are among principles and resources that guide web archiving decisions: Ethics of care, for example in VIU Library’s Pledge to our user communities; OCAP® principles, and awareness of relationality and accountability to Indigenous communities, and potential impacts related to web archiving; Good practice and expert advice, emerging and accessed through communities of practice, e.g. the Canadian Web Archiving Coalition (CWAC); and VIU Library, Evolution of Physical Collections: 2017-2021 VIU Library, Special Collections Guidelines (Under review 2020). Web archives are informed by available capture technologies and also by affordances of the content source; not all websites can be successfully crawled or rendered, and quality of archived versions varies. This project is supported by VIU's Special Funding for COVID-19 research projects and carried out in coordination with the University of Victoria’s COVID-19 Collection and the Canadian Web Archiving Coalition. Contact us at research.help@viu.ca with questions or for more information about content included in the Web Archive. [Working description 2021 April 6]

That was true, but it's even more true now with Delta swirling in our classrooms."

Title: [Comments on letter regarding COVID-19 mitigations in School District 68]

Description: Tom Jackman on Twitter: "A friend sent me this laughably inadequate response letter she received re: covid mitigations in our @sd68bc classrooms. In addition to misrepresenting the science about what is needed to prevent airborne transmission, it omits some key details about its authors. #bced #bcpoli / . @markvwalsh , the @sd68bc Secretary-Treasurer, failed to note that last year the District added more air exchanges throughout the day to provide classrooms with cleaner air, but recently told a teacher group that they would not be doing that this year as it is just too expensive! / For those who say we can't put a price on our kids safety, here are BC school officials apparently managing to do exactly that. They seem to believe clean air in classrooms—a key measure to combat the spread of covid and other airborne diseases—isn't worth the cost. / Charlene McKay, Trustee and Chair of the @sd68bc board, also tends to say one thing and do another. In March 2021, she voted against a motion to extend the school mask mandate to younger grades, agreeing with then @BCSTA_President not to go "above and beyond" WRT to child safety. / What's more, Ms. McKay voted against additional protections for kids like mine, despite the fact that she chose not to have her child attend in-person classes in the District for the entire 2020/21 school year due to health concerns over covid. This is called hypocrisy. / The behaviour shown by BC's school officials is nothing short of scandalous and cowardly. At-risk families are forced to navigate an impossible situation on their own, all while being gaslit about risk. It's time to bring the receipts. #WeHaveReceipts. https://twitter.com/OhCasavant/status/1566099455174406145?s=20&t=iUmQPnlqDHx0pZBM96I0Og"
