Description: Brishti Basu on Twitter: "#NEW: . @VanIslandHealth CMHO Dr. Stanwick says they've been "caught totally unawares" by lack of self-isolation spots for unhoused COVIDpositive people "The rooms we used for isolation have now been repurposed by the hotel industry into rooms for paying guests." #yyj / I asked why VIHA hasn't declare outbreaks at temporary housing facilities, while they do at LTCs: Dr Dee Hoyano said temp housing facilities are people's homes and it would be an invasion of privacy to declare outbreaks there, like it would be at apartment buildings. #yyj / I was also told by orgs like @VicCoolAid and @ourplacesociety that VIHA asked them not to share COVID case counts with residents and staff at shelters. Dr. Stanwick today: "I have no knowledge of such instruction. Each organization has its own policy" @CapitalDailyVic #yyj / he word "privacy" thrown around many times at this briefing as excuse for why residents at shelters aren't allowed to know how many cases are in their own building. Stanwick/Hoyano kept saying "this info is not for the public" in response to my q about why not tell residents / . @cindyeharnett asked about ICU at 170% capacity at Royal Jubilee. Stanwick says he’s not the right person to answer that; he's here to talk about community clusters. "We're all being stretched and stressed" due to personnel limits, not equipment/resources limit #yyj"

Description: We have created this fund as a way to bridge the gap for members of our community that are currently being left behind in the rapidly changing situation we all find ourselves in. One size fits all methods are a good start, but we are not a one size fits all community. Vancouver Island is weathering this storm, but we do not all have the same resources to keep us safe. This fund is a community-based initiative, born out of the belief that no one should be left behind. We are collecting money to redistribute it based on the individuals who apply – this approach will allow us to optimally meet the needs of our diverse community which can’t be adequately characterized by standardized aid programs.

Description: This research has aimed to identify the ways in which social service delivery in the mid-Island region of Vancouver Island has shifted because of COVID-19 conditions. Prompted by initial informal comments regarding the effect of the pandemic, we initiated an 18-month research process that checked in with representatives of social service agencies at six-month intervals. The study offers a local perspective that may have insights and lessons relevant to social service organizations elsewhere.

Description: This contribution considers the ways in which COVID-19 impacted social service delivery in the central Vancouver Island region over 18 months after the declaration of the pandemic. Significant shifts in the external and internal environment were made to accommodate requirements of public health orders, ensure safety in service, and respond to the heightened needs of certain sectors of the population. The impact had a different character for each of six-month tranches studied. Lessons for a post – COVID-19 future include: make micro- to macro-level shifts that allow room for rapid adaptation; facilitate inclusion, especially of those most marginalized; and ensure ongoing reflection. This involves keeping in mind the needs of service users, service providers, and the community.
