Harmful Algal Blooms (HABs) in New York State Web Archive

Collected by: Cornell University Library

Archived since: Jan, 2020

Description:

In recent years, citizens of New York who are living on or around freshwater lakes have learned first-hand how inconvenient and at times dangerous harmful algal blooms (HABs) can be. Many have become involved in citizen science efforts, gathering water samples that can be analyzed for the presence of HABs. Meanwhile, local news sources, NGOs, and government organizations have undertaken efforts to educate the public about the risks of exposure to HABs, and some have shared strategies for reducing the potency and frequency of HABs in their communities. To capture this moment in time, Cornell University Library is preserving and making accessible selected websites identified as being reflective of how citizens are responding to the risk of HABs as well as how scientific information is being shared.

Title: Harmful Algal Bloom (HAB) Action Plans

URL: https://www.dec.ny.gov/chemical/113733.html

Description: "New York State's Water Quality Rapid Response Team, national experts and local stakeholders collaboratively developed Harmful Algal Bloom (HAB) Action Plans for twelve priority lakes that are vulnerable to HABs, are critical sources of drinking water, and are vital tourism drivers. These twelve lakes were chosen as part of Governor Andrew M. Cuomo's State of the State HAB initiative because they represent a wide range of conditions and vulnerabilities, and the lessons learned will be applied to other impacted waterbodies moving forward." - from website, 2020.02.03

Title: New York State announces launch of innovative pilot project to combat Harmful Algal Blooms

URL: https://www.urbancny.com/new-york-state-announces-launch-of-innovative-pilot-project-to-combat-harmful-algal-blooms/

Description: "Governor Andrew M. Cuomo today announced the launch of an innovative new pilot project to combat harmful algal blooms – or HABs – and return clean water to the Village of Southampton’s Agawam Lake. The pilot is directed by the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation and the Office of General Services in partnership with the Village of Southampton. The pilot project is part of the State’s $82 million initiative to study, respond to and prevent HABs in New York waterbodies. If the pilot in Agawam Lake proves successful, it will be applied statewide. The Governor launched the HABs initiative in 2018 with $65 million in state funding." - from website, 2020.02.03. Title: Harmful Algal Bloom monitoring in the Finger Lakes region, New York

URL: https://www.usgs.gov/centers/ny-water/science/harmful-algal-bloom-monitoring-finger-lakes-region-new-york?qt-science_center_objects=0#qt-science_center_objects/

Description: "The purpose of the proposed study is to establish an advanced water-quality monitoring program in three Finger Lakes—Owasco Lake, Seneca Lake, and Skaneateles Lake—using a combination of advanced sensor technology and discrete water-quality data collection to better understand the environmental conditions associated with CyanoHAB development in New York lakes. Continuous water-quality monitoring stations will be established in Owasco Lake and Seneca Lake, and synoptic surveys of factors contributing to HABs will be conducted at all three lakes." - from website, 2020.03.02
