Harmful Algal Blooms (HABs) in New York State Web Archive

Collected by: Cornell University Library

Archived since: Jan, 2020

Description:

In recent years, citizens of New York who are living on or around freshwater lakes have learned first-hand how inconvenient and at times dangerous harmful algal blooms (HABs) can be. Many have become involved in citizen science efforts, gathering water samples that can be analyzed for the presence of HABs. Meanwhile, local news sources, NGOs, and government organizations have undertaken efforts to educate the public about the risks of exposure to HABs, and some have shared strategies for reducing the potency and frequency of HABs in their communities. To capture this moment in time, Cornell University Library is preserving and making accessible selected websites identified as being reflective of how citizens are responding to the risk of HABs as well as how scientific information is being shared.

Title: Harmful Algal Blooms: New York State Takes Action in 2018! - New York State Parks Blog

URL: https://nystateparks.blog/2018/05/22/harmful-algal-blooms-new-york-state-takes-action-in-2018/

Description: "There has been a lot of activity in New York State this spring regarding Harmful Algal Blooms (HABs)! In an effort to raise awareness regarding HABS, Governor Cuomo called together four HAB Summit Meetings across the State (February 27 in New Paltz, March 6 at SUNY ESF, March 20 in Ticonderoga, and March 26 in Rochester). Leading experts from the Department of Health (DOH), Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC), Department of Agriculture and Markets (DAM) and other state and national experts convened to discuss and address the causes of algal blooms in 12 priority waterbodies across the state. The meetings were the first step in the development of action plans to address HAB occurrences in each waterbody." - blog post, posted on website 2018.05.22

Title: Harmful Algal Blooms - A Toxic Hazard in the Adirondacks

URL: https://www.adirondack.net/invasives-harmful-plants/harmful-algal-blooms/

Description: "Algae are an essential part of aquatic ecosystems - both freshwater and marine. These organisms can range in size from single-celled to mulitcellular. Although they usually contain chlorophyll and undergo photosynthesis, unlike true plants, algae lack stems, roots, and leaves. Most of the time, algae are completely harmless, and their presence in a body of water is a sign that the ecosystem is healthy. They are low on the food web, which makes them an important source of nutrients for small aquatic organisms. However, some types of algae can grow fast and spread across the water. While not all of these algal blooms are dangerous, some are known as harmful algal blooms (HABs), and these should be avoided and reported immediately." - from website, 2020.01.31. Information for visitors to the Adirondack region.
