All of us who live within the Skaneateles Lake watershed and nearby areas are ultimately responsible for how well the lake survives. With the appearance of harmful blue-green algae blooms within Skaneateles Lake, the Village is taking our responsibility for protecting this critical recourse seriously by investigating immediate, short and long-term measures that address our impact on the Lake." - from website, 2020.02.03

Description: News article on HABs in Cayuga Lake: "ITHACA, N.Y. — Conditions have been right for Harmful Algal Blooms so far this summer, as blooms have begun popping up again on Cayuga Lake. But, as this has become a regular summer issue, the community has stepped up to closely monitor the blooms and report findings. About 80 volunteers called "HABs Harriers" patrol stretches of Cayuga Lake and send samples of any suspected bloom for local testing. Three local environmental nonprofit organizations are leading efforts to monitor the blooms — the Community Science Institute, the Cayuga Lake Watershed Network and Discover Cayuga Lake." - article posted on website on 2019.07.23

Description: "There has been a lot of activity in New York State this spring regarding Harmful Algal Blooms (HABs)! In an effort to raise awareness regarding HABS, Governor Cuomo called together four HAB Summit Meetings across the State (February 27 in New Paltz, March 6 at SUNY ESF, March 20 in Ticonderoga, and March 26 in Rochester). Leading experts from the Department of Health (DOH), Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC), Department of Agriculture and Markets (DAM) and other state and national experts convened to discuss and address the causes of algal blooms in 12 priority waterbodies across the state. The meetings were the first step in the development of action plans to address HAB occurrences in each waterbody." - blog post, posted on website 2018.05.22

Description: "Algae are an essential part of aquatic ecosystems - both freshwater and marine. These organisms can range in size from single-celled to mulitcellular. Although they usually contain chlorophyll and undergo photosynthesis, unlike true plants, algae lack stems, roots, and leaves. Most of the time, algae are completely harmless, and their presence in a body of water is a sign that the ecosystem is healthy. They are low on the food web, which makes them an important source of nutrients for small aquatic organisms. However, some types of algae can grow fast and spread across the water. While not all of these algal blooms are dangerous, some are known as harmful algal blooms (HABs), and these should be avoided and reported immediately." - from website, 2020.01.31. The pilot is directed by the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation and the Office of General Services in partnership with the Village of Southampton. The pilot project is part of the State’s $82 million initiative to study, respond to and prevent HABs in New York waterbodies.
