Title: Farm LA

URL: http://farmla.org

Description: Farm LA is a non-profit dedicated to rescuing underutilized lots in Los Angeles for solar and agricultural farms. The organization acquires vacant properties and turns them into farms that grow food for community distribution, or solar farms to help the city generate its water and energy from renewable resources. The founders want to help create a cultural awareness and appreciation for community gardening, healthy eating, and sustainable energy. Initially, Farm LA focused its efforts on public mini-farms on sidewalks around Los Angeles, focusing especially in neighborhoods that are considered food deserts. They have implemented 10 such mini-farms, and have since expanded their services. The website for Farm LA provides a history of the nonprofit, as well as major programs on which the volunteers focus: land reclamation for urban farming and establishment of solar farms, youth farming education, advocacy, and farmers' markets and food donations. The site features a store with branded merchandise for sale, links to sign up to volunteer, and donation and donor information.
