Description: On May 13, 2014, former Governor Pat McCrory signed the executive order at East Carolina University, one of six University of North Carolina campuses participating in the pilot program with an emphasis on prevention and treatment. ECU was joined by UNC-Chapel Hill, North Carolina A&T, UNC-Charlotte, UNC-Wilmington and UNC-Greensboro in the program. The Governor’s Substance Abuse and Underage Drinking Prevention and Treatment Task Force will build on statewide prevention, treatment and enforcement initiatives implemented by the Alcohol Beverage Control Commission, Alcohol Law Enforcement Division, the Department of Health and Human Services, and the UNC system. ECU has implemented education, prevention, and intervention initiatives that include educating students during orientation; having required electronic education modules; offering programming for specific groups like Greek life and student athletes; and providing assessment, counseling, and referral resources. The next important step for our campus and others across the state is to build recovery initiatives to help students stop the cycle of addiction. The CRC allows ECU to create a support network of services to assist students along their developmental and educational journey.

Description: Fraternities and sororities provide an enriching student experience that helps individuals to grow and develop as young men and women who have leadership and social skills, who prioritize their academics and service to community. Membership in a fraternity or sorority is life-long and provides connections long after graduation. Membership experiences focus around the following pillars of fraternity/sorority life: Friendship: The Greek Community allows for a home-away-from-home environment you can proudly come back to after graduation. Being part of the Greek Community is a chance to be a part of something greater than yourself. You will also gain lifelong friendships, memories, and a strong sense of belonging. Leadership: The Greek Community offers endless opportunities for developing leadership skills in its members. Members hold positions within their chapter, ranging from chapter president to committee chair. Today, it takes more than a college degree to be successful. Employers want college graduates who have demonstrated leadership abilities and aren’t afraid to get involved. The Greek Community is able to provide its members with these opportunities. Philanthropy and Service: Greeks take pride in community service and philanthropy. Each chapter has a foundation or charity they sponsor through philanthropic events. Sororities and fraternities sponsor a multitude of activities each year to impact the local community and raise money. Scholarship: Fraternities and sororities strive for high scholarship and developing academic excellence among their chapter members. Fraternities and sororities offer time management, study skills, and other programming to help members be successful in the classroom. The Greek Community traditionally maintains a higher G.P.A. than the all-University average. Greek Life is a part of the Student Involvement and Leadership Department.

As part of the Department of Intercultural Affairs within Student Involvement and Leadership at ECU, the LGBTQ Center works in conjunction with our colleagues in the Ledonia Wright Cultural Center, the Women and Gender Office, the Center for Leadership and Civic Engagement, and the Lucille Gorham Intergenerational Community Center to cultivate a transformative and culturally competent community centered in intercultural learning. The Peel LGBTQ Center works each day to develop tomorrow’s leaders to serve and inspire positive change. Since our founding in 2011, we have served the entire ECU campus. Our new home is in Suite 209 in the Main Campus Student Center and we are open Monday through Friday from 8:00 am to 5:00 pm. Our resources include: a lending library; information on campus, local, and national resources; and four computer workstations, in addition to a social area, a conference room, and offices for our staff. Throughout the year, we offer educational programs and events, and participate in national campaigns such as National Coming Out Day, Transgender Day of Remembrance, World AIDS Day, “Gay? Fine by Me,” Bisexual Awareness Week, Asexual Awareness Week, and Transgender Day of Visibility."
