Title: East Carolina University - Zeta Psi

URL: http://ecu.alphaomicronpi.org/

Description: Alpha Omicron Pi Fraternity was founded on January 2, 1897 at Barnard College of Columbia University in New York City. The ideals of sincerity, service, and friendship provide the foundation for AOII. As one of our founders Stella George Stern Perry explained, "We cared so profoundly for one another that we unconsciously desired a society based upon original feeling... We felt that as love never faileth, a future on that foundation was assured." With over 168,000 initiated members from 206 collegiate chapters, the values on which AOII was founded help lead us in the decisions we make and the behaviors we exhibit in our daily lives. We are inspired to promote the values of simplicity, integrity, tolerance, generosity, personal dignity, and love. Our lives are to be living symbols of these values that we hold in common. They enable us to go with character and confidence into the world around us, with assurance in knowing AOII is ours, offering friendships and opportunities throughout our lifetime.

Title: Psi Chi: The International Honor Society in Psychology and the Physchology Club at East Carolina University

URL: http://myweb.ecu.edu/bakermich/psichihp.htm

Description: Psi Chi began at ECU in 1966 under the leadership of Dr. William Grossnickle. Throughout the years Psi Chi has endeavored to serve the Department and all students in psychology. Most notably, the Psi Chi Library (Rawl 302) continues to provide a quiet place to study, handy reference books, and an alternative "conference room" for student research projects and commitee work. Because of the hard work of Psi Chi members in the past, we also have an endowed scholarship for an undergraduate student each year. Dissatisfied by the impersonal nature of the University graduation ceremony, ECU Psi Chi members began coordinating a departmental graduation ceremony. The ceremony is well attended, anxiously anticipated by graduates and their families, and includes a nice reception afterward. We have also sponsored a Faculty-Student Pot Luck Luncheons in past semesters to encourage student-faculty interaction outside of the classroom. While departmental service projects are important, the emphasis of programming is on students. Psi Chi helps psychology students better understand the field of psychology, the career options available in psychology, and ways to become more involved in your education at ECU. We have speakers each semester who discuss getting into graduate school, research opportunities at ECU, and careers in psychology. There is always a speaker who is currently working in the field and will share with us what their job is like and how they got there. Psi Chi also offers students the opportunity for leadership. Each year we elect officers to lead the chapter for the following year. We also have a number of committees that operate to implement the projects of the organization. We invite everyone to learn organizational skills, influence skills, and to improve your public speaking skills by becoming an officer or committee chair for Psi Chi.

Title: ECU Greek Life

URL: http://www.ecu.edu/greeklife/

Description: Fraternities and sororities provide an enriching student experience that helps individuals to grow and develop as young men and women who have leadership and social skills, who prioritize their academics and service to community. Membership in a fraternity or sorority is life-long and provides connections long after graduation. Membership experiences focus around the following pillars of fraternity/sorority life: Friendship: The Greek Community allows for a home-away-from-home environment you can proudly come back to after graduation. Being part of the Greek Community is a chance to be a part of something greater than yourself. You will also gain lifelong friendships, memories, and a strong sense of belonging. Leadership: The Greek Community offers endless opportunities for developing leadership skills in its members. Members hold positions within their chapter, ranging from chapter president to committee chair. Today, it takes more than a college degree to be successful. Employers want college graduates who have demonstrated leadership abilities and aren’t afraid to get involved. The Greek Community is able to provide its members with these opportunities. Philanthropy and Service: Greeks take pride in community service and philanthropy. Each chapter has a foundation or charity they sponsor through philanthropic events. Sororities and fraternities sponsor a multitude of activities each year to impact the local community and raise money. Scholarship: Fraternities and sororities strive for high scholarship and developing academic excellence among their chapter members. Fraternities and sororities offer time management, study skills, and other programming to help members be successful in the classroom. The Greek Community traditionally maintains a higher G.P.A. than the all-University average. Greek Life is a part of the Student Involvement and Leadership Department.
