Description: The Mission of the Melbourne Dental School is to be a world-class, research-based school, offering education of the highest quality and to play a leading national and international role with particular relevance to the Asia - Pacific region. In recent years, the school has attracted more research funding than any other dental school in Australia and in 2003-4 established a Cooperative Research Centre for Oral Health Science and the Victorian Centre for Oral Health Science. The school has a major commitment to undergraduate dental education and the training of dental therapists and dental hygienists. It is at the forefront of graduate dental education and has Australia's largest postgraduate program. It also offers a variety of exciting and valuable continuing professional development programs for dental practitioners. The diverse range of Australian and international students from many social and ethnic backgrounds provides a stimulating intellectual environment which enhances the learning experience for all students at the school. The Melbourne Dental School has a strong tradition in dental research and an established international reputation in several research areas. Research in the school is an integral component of staff and student activities underpinning both the undergraduate and graduate curricula. The School is ranked as the leading dental research organisation in Australia by the Department of Education, Science and Training. Globally it has been ranked together with the leading dental schools at Harvard University and the University of Toronto based on the achievements of its staff and students. The major research activities of the school are conducted by four major research groups which cover a vast area of scientific research from basic science to clinical studies and involve a range of scientific disciplines. The School provides a stimulating and challenging intellectual environment at the forefront of oral health science research with state-of-the-art technologies and international collaborations.
