Description: Murrup Barak - Melbourne Institute for Indigenous Development was established to provide a focal point for work occurring across the University in Indigenous studies. Almost two hundred staff across the University already have some involvement in Indigenous studies and research. The University also has a number of Indigenous specialist programs such as the Centre for Indigenous Education, the Academy of Sports Health Education, the Wilin Centre, the Onemda VicHealth Koori Health Unit and the Australian Indigenous Studies program. The Murrup Barak - the Spirit of Barak - is a name from the Woiwurung language which honours the memory of a visionary leader William Barak. This name reflects our respect for Indigenous cultures and knowledge and our vision for an Institute that will drive innovation, creativity and the development of trusting and ethical relationships.
