NGOs in Nepal

Collected by: Cornell University Library

Archived since: Oct, 2018

Description:

Throughout recorded history, Nepal has nestled between the giant cultural formations of India to the south and China/Tibet to the north. With the globalization of modern times, international interests and concerns draw Nepal into contact with more distant corners of the world. There are now a multitude of non-governmental organizations at work in Nepal, many headquartered in the Kathmandu Valley. Some are international NGOs and some are purely Nepali, some are long running and some are startups. All of the websites archived here are NGO self-presentations of their aspirations and their achievements on various fronts—humanitarian, environmental, economic, political, religious, and more.

Description: Social Development Canter (SDC) is a registered Non Government and Non-Profitable social welfare organization. We discuss all forms of caste & class violence, gender & domestic violence, all kinds of social & economic evils and discriminations prevailing in our society leading to conflict. We concluded that the root cause for such violence and social evils is not only economic but also the caste & ethnic and patriarchal structures of social organization. These have perpetuated poverty, many other kinds of social evil and discrimination and we concluded that the only way to resolve conflict is in a democratic and institutionalized way. Therefore SDC was the result of our resolve. -- From the website, 2019.07.01 Organization founded in 1997

Description: Organization founded in 2005 Umbrella Organization Nepal is a non-profit NGO and registered charity in Nepal and working to alleviate the impact of trafficking, poverty and war on children and their families in Nepal. Established in 2005 in response to the growing number of illegal ‘orphanages’ neglecting children’s most basic rights – food, education, safe shelter, healthcare and love – we are a family-first, children’s charity which has rescued over 400 vulnerable children with the help of the Child Welfare Board, and reintegrated many back with their families and rural communities. Currently, we are supporting 75 children and youth in our Reintegration and Next Step Education programmes. We no longer operate childcare homes, with a focus nowadays on education opportunities for young people, and building awareness in rural communities around issues of child trafficking, child labour and child marriage. - From the website 2021.06.01

Description: Since 2001, APC-Nepal provides the street children of Kathmandu with a sympathetic ear, moral support and a wide range of facilities, including various shelters with living conditions where they can feel secure and have the freedom and opportunity to learn and develop. Since its inception, APC has realized that street children can not and should not be considered as passive victims of their family, society, or fate. On the contrary, in spite of their young age, they need first to be listened to, empowered and respected as the prime actors of their lives and decisions. This realization has never ceased to guide APC’s development throughout the years, and has greatly contributed to making APC one of the most successful NGOs for street and marginalized children in Nepal. - From the website 2018.12.03 Organization founded in 2001
