NGOs in Nepal

Collected by: Cornell University Library

Archived since: Oct, 2018

Description:

Throughout recorded history, Nepal has nestled between the giant cultural formations of India to the south and China/Tibet to the north. With the globalization of modern times, international interests and concerns draw Nepal into contact with more distant corners of the world. There are now a multitude of non-governmental organizations at work in Nepal, many headquartered in the Kathmandu Valley. Some are international NGOs and some are purely Nepali, some are long running and some are startups. All of the websites archived here are NGO self-presentations of their aspirations and their achievements on various fronts—humanitarian, environmental, economic, political, religious, and more.

Description: Organization founded in 2004 Build Change saves lives in earthquakes and typhoons. Our mission is to greatly reduce deaths, injuries, and economic losses caused by housing and school collapses due to earthquakes and typhoons in emerging nations. Following the earthquakes in April and May 2015, the Government of Nepal mandated that housing reconstruction be homeowner-driven. Therefore Build Change’s strategy is to capacitate the Nepalese Government, INGOs, local NGOs, and other organizations to become facilitators of safe construction practices and implementers of safe reconstruction at scale. In January 2016, we were officially registered as an INGO in Nepal. - From the website 2021.06.01

Description: Organization founded in 1979 Americares is a health-focused humanitarian organization that responds to people affected by poverty or disaster with life-changing health programs, medicine and medical supplies. Although Americares had done very limited work in Nepal prior to the earthquake (primarily through support for volunteer medical outreach teams), the organization responded to the disaster within 48 hours and quickly established a presence in the overall response effort. It was determined after assessing the damage to the health system that Americares would establish an in-country office, warehouse and longer-term health programs to restore health services for survivors, rebuild health facilities and address the stress and trauma wounds caused by the disaster. - From the website 2021.06.01
