Description: On November 27, 2019, the University of North Carolina Board of Governors announced a settlement regarding the disposition of the UNC-Chapel Hill Confederate monument known as "Silent Sam." Among other terms, the settlement granted the North Carolina Division Sons of Confederate Veterans, Inc. ownership of the monument and a $2.5 million charitable trust for expenses related to care of the monument. In response, a number of statements regarding the settlement were circulated on social media and directed to the University administration. This collection contains many of those statements. A brief statement in response to the Dec 11th "Message from Interim Chancellor Kevin M. Guskiewicz about concerns about the Confederate Monument" and Dec 6th "Message from Interim Chancellor Kevin M. Guskiewicz on Board of Governors settlement"

Description: On December 3, 2018, the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill Board of Trustees announced a proposal to construct a new building on South Campus to house the Confederate monument known as “Silent Sam.” In response, a number of open letters and statements regarding the proposal and teaching assistant grade strike were circulated on social media and directed to the University administration. This collection contains many of those statements.
