Description: Trinity Church in the financial district of Lower Manhattan in New York City is one of the oldest religious institutions in America. Though the standing church has been rebuilt three times, the roots of its congregation go back to 1696 and include numerous historical figures. The church stands a mere 200 yards from where the second plane hit the South Tower on September 11, 2001, the site known as ground zero. A new digital organ replaced the irreplaceable Skinner Pipe Organ that was destroyed as a result of the attacks allowing the concerts to continue to attest to the resiliency of the church, its congregation and Lower Manhattan.

Description: In 1847, a Jesuit priest, John Larkin, was charged with founding a church to serve the faithful in New York City. With only 50 cents and an abundance of faith, he left Fordham and headed for Manhattan – a full day’s travel at that time – beginning the great journey that led to the founding of the St. Frances Xavier Community. The new church built in 1850 soon proved inadequate so, in May 1878, with 5,000 people in attendance, the cornerstone was laid in the Chelsea neighborhood for the current magnificent church designed by the famous architect, Patrick C. Keely.

Description: Established in l845 at a gathering of 33 Jews from Germany, Temple Emanu-El held its first services in a second floor loft at the corner of Grand and Clinton streets on the Lower East Side. With more Jews coming from Germany to New York, and with the growing success of the community, the congregation moved progressively uptown — both physically and spiritually. By l868 — only 23 years after founding Temple Emanu-El — the congregants built an edifice at Fifth Avenue and East 43rd Street, which was at that time the largest synagogue structure in America. Temple Emanu-El already had gained the reputation of having the most prominent congregation of members in the country.
