Description: The South Alabama Regional Planning Commission was initially organized in 1964 by local governments in Mobile County and was first known as the Mobile County Regional Planning Commission. The Commission became a tri-county region in 1968 when Baldwin and Escambia Counties entered into full membership with Mobile County at which time it became the South Alabama Regional Planning Commission. Description: The Tennessee-Tombigbee Waterway is a connecting link between established water transportation routes that serve shippers and producers in the South and the Midwest as well as deep water ports along the eastern Gulf of Mexico. This unique feature has already benefited commercial interests in 18 states since it opened for business in 1985. The 234 - mile waterway begins at its northern end at Pickwick Lake on the Tennessee River, flows through northeast Mississippi and west Alabama, and connects with the established Warrior-Tombigbee navigation system at Demopolis, Alabama. From there, commerce travels northward as far as Port Birmingham, Alabama or south to Mobile, Alabama, and other destinations along the Gulf coast. The main features of Tenn-Tom are 10 locks and dams and a 29-mile man-made canal, one of the largest earth moving projects in history. The 10 locks raise or lower barges and boats a total of 341 feet, the difference in elevation between the two ends of the waterway. There are some 40 recreation areas that provide easy access to nearly 44,000 acres of water - related sports and other activities. In addition, marinas are located along the Tenn-Tom and connecting waterways to meet the needs of local as well as transient boaters. Over 110,000 acres of land were acquired for the construction and operation of the project. Some of these lands are available for public hunting. Also, another 88,000 acres, mostly bottomland hardwoods, have been purchased from voluntary sellers and managed by the two state conservation agencies for wildlife habitat. After 12 years of construction, the waterway opened to commercial traffic in January 1985. Seventeen public ports and terminals are strategically located within the waterway corridor to serve shippers' needs.

Initiates a network of local and community groups and child advocates to enable organizations to coordinate activities and assist and educate each other. Actively seeks and applies for federal and private grants to fund children’s programs. Establishes a repository for information on programs which offer services for, or are for the benefit of, or in any way affect Alabama’s children. Reviews the budget requests for children’s services of state agencies that administer children’s programs other than education programs offered by Department of Education for K-12. Works with the state and county children’s policy councils and the state and county children’s services facilitation teams in order to ensure that a comprehensive coordinated effort is in place to provide for children’s services. Requests any state or local agency or department which administers programs that directly affect Alabama’s children to submit information deemed necessary to evaluate and assess the relationship between children’s programs and the effectiveness of those programs.

Description: The Alabama Legislature passed the Alabama Crime Victims Compensation Commission Law on June 1, 1984. Alabama's compensation law covers a variety of expenses for which compensation is paid. The Alabama Crime Victims Compensation Commission provides the only substantial financial compensation to victims for expenses for personal injuries including medical, funeral and counseling bills. This assistance lessens the financial burden on innocent victims of violent crime and serves as a vehicle of hope for the rights of crime victims. "It is the mission of the Alabama Crime Victims Compensation Commission to provide timely and efficient assistance to innocent victims of violent crime in a confidential manner. The Commission primarily offers this assistance by providing eligible victims of violent crime with financial assistance for qualified expenses, while always being mindful that crime victims have the right to be treated with fairness, compassion and respect. The Commission also works in conjunction with others in the victim service community to advocate for victims’ rights and other related issues."
