Description: The Partnership for People with Disabilities, formerly known as the Virginia Institute for Developmental Disabilities (VIDD), is recognized by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, Administration on Developmental Disabilities (ADD), as a university center for excellence in developmental disabilities. Founded in 1985 under the leadership of Dr. Howard Garner with fewer than five staff at Virginia Commonwealth University; and subsequently developed over the last 20 years by Dr. Fred Orelove, the Partnership today is home to more than 20 federal and state programs, staffed by more than 80 professionals, family members, people with disabilities, and university students supporting individuals with disabilities and their families. The Partnership maintains an interdisciplinary approach to all of its activities, which allows it to explore a wide spectrum of professional services and community interests as it seeks to expand opportunities to individuals with disabilities. In our efforts to create communities where all people live, work, and play together with choices and independence, we rely on our partners which include numerous disability service providers, K-12 schools and school divisions, universities and colleges, professional organizations, state and local agencies. Our ADD-funded partners in the "Developmental Disabilities Network" include the Virginia Board for People with Disabilities (Virginia's Developmental Disabilities Council) and Virginia Office of Protection and Advocacy (Virginia's Protection and Advocacy system). In collaboration with our partners, we are able to accomplish what no one agency or individual could ever hope to accomplish alone. No history of the Partnership would be complete without a special tribute to our advisory council members, advocacy groups, parents and parent organizations, individuals with disabilities and family members, who are at the core of this exciting journey toward self-determination and community inclusion for persons with disabilities.

Description: The Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) is seeking to develop a new project designated as the U.S. Route 460 Corridor Improvements Project. The proposed project is being procured in accordance with provisions of the Public-Private Transportation Act of 1995 as amended (PPTA). The project entails the new construction of approximately 55 miles of four-lane divided limited access highway between Petersburg and Suffolk Virginia. The project will extend from the existing U.S. Route 460 near its interchange with Interstate 295 (I-295) in Prince George County to the U.S. Route 58 bypass just south of the existing U.S. Route 460 in the City of Suffolk. The corridor alignment for this project runs south of the existing U.S. Route 460 for its entirety and has been approved by the Commonwealth Transportation Board. The Final Environmental Impact Study and Record of Decision have been approved by the Federal Highway Administration. The proposed project includes intermediate interchanges at the following cross roads. The project does not include improvements to the existing U.S. Route 460 or other adjacent roadways: Routes 156 and 625 in Prince George County Routes 602, 40 and 620 in Sussex County Route 616 in Southampton County Route 258 in Isle of Wight County The project will be developed as a PPTA project in which VDOT will enter into a partnership with a private partner to design, build and finance the new roadway. The project will be a tolled facility with these funds being collected and used to pay for project costs. The toll rates are estimated to be around 7 cents per mile for cars and 21 cents per mile for trucks when the road opens in 2018. It is also anticipated that state, federal and private funding sources will be utilized to deliver the project.

Description: Teaching MoneyVA.org was created in 2011 to help Virginia’s high school teachers find quality resources that they can use in teaching Virginia’s new economics and personal finance course. Background on Virginia’s Economics and Personal Finance Requirement In February 2009, the Virginia Board of Education adopted revisions to the Regulations Establishing Standards for Accrediting Public Schools in Virginia (8 VAC 20-131-5 et seq). Included in these revisions were changes to graduation requirements effective with the ninth-grade class of 2010-2011. One of the changes is the addition of a one-credit requirement in economics and personal finance as a condition to graduate from high school (except those earning a Modified Standard Diploma). The implementation of these new graduation requirements was delayed one year by the General Assembly in 2010 and becomes effective for the students who enter the ninth grade in the 2011-12 school year. The Economics and Personal Finance Standards of Learning, adopted by the Board of Education, and accompanying Curriculum Frameworks provide the foundation for the content of this course. School divisions have the authority to determine whether the course is taught as a one-credit course in economics and personal finance, as two half-credit courses – one each in economics and personal finance, or a combination of both. School divisions may also determine at which grade level(s) high school students will take the course. TeachingMoneyVA.org uses the Resource Criteria as a guide in selecting the curriculum resources to be included in this database. All submissions are reviewed by the Review Team. Inclusion in the database does not constitute endorsement of the materials, and resource providers may not use this inclusion to imply approval or endorsement. All submissions are accepted at the sole discretion of the TeachingMoneyVA.org Review Team. We reserve the right to decline a submission for any reason and do not comment on unsuccessful submissions. TeachingMoneyVA.org or its partner organizations do not guaranty the accuracy of the information provided in these resources, the availability of these resources, or the user’s satisfaction with the resources.

Description: The Virginia Assistive Technology System (VATS) is a statewide program authorized and funded by the Assistive Technology Act of 2004, as amended and administered by the Virginia Department for Aging and Rehabilitative Services. VATS was established in 1990 with commitment to increasing awareness, accessibility and acquisition of assistive technology. The program is guided by an Advisory Council composed of individuals with disabilities, family members and representatives from Virginia's disability service agencies. One of VATS priorities’ is to establish assistive technology recycling programs across the State. VATS will work with local groups to plan and implement AT recycling specific to each community. In 2009, VATS applied for and received a grant from the Commonwealth Neurotrauma Initiative (CNI) Trust Fund Board. The three-year grant which is administered by VATS, created the Virginia Reuse Network (VRN). The mission of the VRN is to build the statewide reuse program’s capacity to better serve Virginians with spinal cord injuries (SCI) and traumatic brain injuries (TBI), including Veterans, and to implement a state-of-the-art sanitization and processing program for DME through the purchase of innovative DME cleaning systems. VRN partner programs will work collaboratively with network affiliates and VATS to address the durable medical equipment (DME) needs of persons with disabilities, primarily those who do not have the resources necessary to purchase needed equipment. Although the VRN will continue to serve qualifying individuals with disabilities, the VRN is interested in improving service delivery and tracking reuse services provided to individuals with SCI and TBI. VATS has three Assistive Technology Regional Sites that provide community contact points throughout Virginia for assistive technology information and resources across designated regions. These Regional Sites provide training, public awareness, and general technical assistance for consumers who can benefit from the use of assistive technology.
