Description: Before there were huge steel mills and iron foundries in Birmingham, small stone blast furnaces, built from 1815 through the Civil War, provided the backbone of the state’s iron industry. The following is a tribute to the old ironmasters and ironworkers who constructed and operated the first generation of iron furnaces, bloomeries, rolling mills and foundries in Alabama.
