Description: Website for the North Carolina Department of Environmental Quality. Originally established by the General Assembly in 1989 by legislation, the department was created from combining elements of the Department of Human Resources and the Department of Natural Resources and Community Development. It was initially called the Department of Environment, Health and Natural Resources (DEHNR). In 1997 the agency name was changed to the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR). In 2015, the General Assembly moved state parks, the North Carolina Zoo, and the Museum of Natural Resources to the renamed Department of Natural and Cultural Resources, and DENR became the Department of Environmental Quality, focusing on environmental protection, regulation, and energy policy.
